AP - Luciano Pavarotti, whose vibrant high C's and ebullient showmanship made him one the most beloved tenors, has died, his manager told The Associated Press. He was 71.
Pavarotti had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year and underwent further treatment in August 2007. Earlier, it was reported by Italy's AGI news agency that Pavarotti's health had deteriorated and the 71-year-old singer was in a "very serious condition".
Pavarotti, who was released from hospital on August 25 after undergoing more than two weeks of tests and treatment, was being attended to at home by cancer specialists, AGI said. Considered one of the greatest tenors of his generation, Pavarotti underwent surgery in July 2006 to remove a pancreatic tumour. In a text message to Reuters, Pavarotti's manager Terri Robson said: "Luciano Pavarotti died one hour ago". A TV station in Pavarotti's home city of Modena had earlier reported that the opera star was unconscious and suffering from kidney failure, and that family and friends had gathered at his villa to be near him.
That's sad, isn't it? An absolute legend gone.
