    Scratch that actually - read Sergio's posts (proper way to send off your teenage years by the way ) but I've never really discussed drinking in depth with people from other cultures (other than establish that I seemingly generally drink a lot more than they do).

    What are your views on drink/ getting drunk and would they differ much from the culture (country if you will) that you've grown up in?

    Also, if you're open to the idea, when and what was your first alcoholic beverage and again would this differ from the norm in your country?


    Well, I've been drunk on every day of the week. I go to college here in Belgium and I have an appartment in the city I study. You can go out anytime you want, there's always something open. There's a street in Ghent, where I study, that's full of bars, kebab-places, little dancings and a pharmacy. Haha. The bars are almost always full of people. My first year in college, I had to walk to class through that street and I had to step over a few piles of puke almost every day.

    In Belgium, you can get drunk every night if you want, there's always a bar that's open, even in the small towns. In the summer vacation, a lot of people sit outside on terraces (I don't know if that's the right term, but I mean in front of the bar), having a beer or so in the middle of the week. Having a drink is very normal here. I think people have their first alcoholic beverage when they're about 14. It's legal at the age of 18. I think the first alcoholic drink for most people is a pint, Jupiler, Maes or Stella. My first drink was beer mixed with coca cola, 'cause I didn't like the bitter taste of the beer. Now, I love it. And I've discovered all of the 'girly' drinks too, mmm.

    My view on drinking is that it's all good, but you have to know when to stop, not much fun anymore when you drank yourself into a coma.

    Wow, that was a long post. But that's about it for Belgium. Not so different from Ireland I guess.

    By the way, love this topic, but I want more drunk stories!

Give it a few weeks and I'll be in a position to make contributions to this fine thread too - something tells me I'll be absolutely hammered next time I'm on 'it' though, I've not drunk much in the last couple of months and obviously, uni. being uni...I'll give you all a heads-up now, 23rd of September
