1. NO! the opposite is true! I repeat: POP is a great and fresh album just because it isn't overproduced, endlessly reworked or changed! The less time they have to put a new record out, the better!

    True.
Look at Zooropa (wrote and recorded between concerts), Pop (rushed and pressed) and Achtung Baby (recorded in 1'5 years) . . . . And then look to All That You Can't Leave Behind and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (an almost 3 years gap between previous tour and the albums)...
  3. yeah, it seems the more they overdo it on the quest for perfection, the more they overshoot it.

just write some good songs, record them and play them.

  4. I believe that's the beauty of it. Look at the production of Bomb. They had too much time and when you have too much time you tend to put in too much of everything.

It wouldn't be a good thing to rush things these days because they aren't any more at their creative peak. I'm mean, just look at the rubbish called "Glastonbury", they'd write song like that in 2 minutes back in AB era and then never play it.

Now it takes a lot more time to make things great. I believe that today they (except Bono) work like 5x times more on their music than in their best days.

  5. Sorry, but Pop would have been better if they hadn't released it

I seem to be the only one here who really dislikes Pop and really likes NLOTH.

Come to think of it, I guess NLOTH has positioned itself on the nr. 4 spot of my alltime favourite U2 albums (JT - AB - UF - NLOTH).

dont worry man. im not so keen on Pop either and NLOTH is my number 1. The first four songs on No Line is probably the best sequence of songs on any of their albums.

Nope, I don't really like Pop that much either. I think Mofo and Last Night On Earth are KILLER live songs, but other than that, I probably never listen to it.
  8. I think NLOTH, Pop, and Unforgettable Fire are all "experimental" albums. They are all good albums, but the experimentalism takes away some of the polish and cohesion that you see on their more landmark albums (JT, AB and, in my opinion, War and ATYCLB).
  9. I listened to Pop today for the first time in a while, by the way, and its a really good album. They aren't any duds in U2's catalogue --- not even Passengers.
  10. And one more thing: as I said on another post, I think NLOTH (and perhaps Songs of Ascent as well) will be seen as prequels to a better, more satisfying album. Same as UF to JT.
  11. But when they release Songs of Ascent, the rest of the songs from the NLOTH sessions, I think their will be a real debate over whether the two albums taken as a single double-album might be up there with JT and AB.

The songwritng and musicianship on NLOTH is the best since AB. There is just a lack of something that gives the whole album something special -- a couple of bigger hit songs, a better ordering of the tracks, and the removal of Stand Up Comedy and a few of the cheesier lyrics in CRazy Tonight would have helped. And probably the inclusion of EBW, which would have been the perfect closer to NLOTH as the opener.

I'm waiting for the 5-star reviewed "The Complete NLOTH Sessions" in ten years.

I find Unforgettable Fire to be a better album than Joshua Tree. Great singles but stuff like Trip Through Your Wires, One Tree Hill, Exit, and Mothers of the Disappeared don't appeal to me.
