True.
Look at Zooropa (wrote and recorded between concerts), Pop (rushed and pressed) and Achtung Baby (recorded in 1'5 years) . . . . And then look to All That You Can't Leave Behind and How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb (an almost 3 years gap between previous tour and the albums)...
Originally posted by paulc:For an album that took 5 years to make, NLOTH is massively disapointing. A classic case of work expanding to fit the time available. Pop has grown on me over the years, but truth be told, as a totality I maybe like half the tracks on both, where as on JT its all of them, AB its all of them, ATYCLB its all but one of them, same with HTDAAB (it would have been all of them had they stuck with Yanex and Wine and not replaced with Fast Cars). Pop just shades it for me which is shame given that the first 4 tracks on NLOTH are amazing.

Sorry, but Pop would have been better if they hadn't released it![]()
I seem to be the only one here who really dislikes Pop and really likes NLOTH.
Come to think of it, I guess NLOTH has positioned itself on the nr. 4 spot of my alltime favourite U2 albums (JT - AB - UF - NLOTH).

I agree with you,but AB was released at the end of 1991.Their previous world tour was in 1987,supporting the JT tour.R&H(1988) was half an album, and they didnt tour it, til a full 12 months later(1989),and only in Europe and Australia.I had to wait 5 long years betweeen tours. My point is,AB was a very carefully plotted release.Like you said,1 and a half yrs in the studio.ATYCLB was released only a little over 2 years ater the Pop tour ended.AB and JT are the bands masterpieces.Zooropa (rushed) and PoP(very rushed) are very popular in Europe. Not here in the States.NLOTH is better. But not by much.NLOTH died a quick death here.Might have been the fact the band tour it here a full 6 months after it was released. The European tour started almost 4 months after it was released. It couldnt ever muster up a 4th single. The band have only waited for a period TO TOUR, if the release was at the end of the year(AB,ATYCLB,HTDAAB)not at the start (War,JT,PoP)PoP had 5 singles.I dont know if its just a coincidence, but 360 and PoP are both weak sellers and both tours were very VERY over the top.Big stages, stadium ONLY tours.Paul Rees, from Q magazine,August 2010, #289,said this recently. He was reviewing Bruces new DVD,page 142..."Bruce has no elaborate visual trickery live and nothing at all like U2s claw to divert attention (from the music)".Ouch.My opinion is that yes,I feel the claw,as was Pops 50 foot Lemon, diverted attention FROM THE MUSIC.In the 1980s,when U2 were all about music, their shows were the best.No 50 foot lemons,no claws, and no Devil outfits for Gods sake.I didnt get the whole PoP thing. The band dressing like the fucking Village People,I still cringe thinking about it.Larry is on record as saying "no way" the band would do something that elaborate and over the top again.But,IMO,360 is very close to PoP Larry.Just no Village People outfits thank God.
