1. And I totally forgot about A Sort of Homecoming, great great opener!

How can you guys be so certain about your favorite opener/songs/album/setlist/etc…??
I think it’s really hard to decide such things (took me a while to constitute my favorite opening numbers), my opinion constantly changes, maybe cause I’m not that long familiar with u2 songs? I don’t know (could it be I heard too much albums in too little time? Maybe that’s not healthy )
Anyway, apparently most of you guys prefer Streets, which I totally understand of course, it stays one of their best songs! Now I begin to doubt again, streets? … or maybe a sort of homecoming, aaarhh! I’m not good a those things (says the topic starter )
  2. It's hard to decide, indeed.. But Kaurie, when you've done it 20.000 times you simply get used to it
  3. it s hard ....

    1- Streets
    2- A sort of homecoming
    3- Beatiful day
    4-Zooropa
5 - No line on the horizon
  4. got to be streets.
  5. I can't recall a really bad album opener.

Best ones are Homecoming, Streets, Zoo and Zoo.
  6. The best just has to be Streets. Sets the tone for the rest of the album, instantly recognizable, anthemic, live staple--just utter brilliance.

I'd say coming in second is Zooropa, if only for the fact that it really encapsulates that era perfectly. Always wished they'd play this live. The couple of times they did play it, it just wasn't as "complete" (literally and figuratively)...it failed to capture the chaotic, jumbled depth of the album version.

  7. Personally, I think Bomb could have opened with either Love and Peace, or City, and left Vertigo for either the second track, or the haflway-through-smash.

Though "Uno Dos Tres Catorce" is a badass album opener...

  8. I have a long way to go then..

I could also go with City of Blinding Lights
  9. Streets, closely followed by the two Zoo's.

I think for me that those songs set the mood of the album. It also brings back memories for me and certain feelings. It's like what Flood said, that these songs take you to a place, it's very lively, atmospheric and a sense of space. My VERY VERY first encounter with ANY U2 song was Where the Streets Have No Name. I thought they were the Rolling Stones the first time I heard it (I was 6 or 7 at the time so cut me a break). I remember going through my moms record collection thinking these are all old foggies, and then there was The Joshua Tree LP and I was like, They don't look like oldfoggies but their music MUST be for old foggie. I was mistaken that day. Being an avid U2 fan for the past 17 years I can easily distinguish what songs turn me on and which aren't my cup of tea necessarily.
  11. Discotheque

    Zoo Station

    Vertigo

  12. exactly! I was listening NLOTH this afternoon on the bus and it felt like i listened to it for the first time, that feeling when i was fully discovering my first U2 album, precious memories, really reliving such moments are priceless, although it only happens rarely

Sometimes I relate songs to things that happened in my life, for instance when I had to make a maquette/model for school, I was listening to The Unforgetable Fire (album) over and over again, and always when Indian summer sky was on, i heard this sentence: you give yourself to this the longest day , and I was like: omg, this is really the longest day, I worked all night (while i was dying to get some sleep), finished my maquette at 7:30am in the morning, jury was at 8:30u, I was too late. Now when i hear this song, it always reminds me of that horrible night (sorry, off topic)
