1. I heard SoA comes out December 20, 2012 and further world releases on December 21, 2012.

Pop was by their standards, poor selling, so they did their big "back to basics" record. ATYCLB was a huge hit so they followed it up with a similar record. HTDAAB did well, but seemed like there were complaints about U2 stagnating so we got the more experimental NLOTH.That album is being thrown in with Pop as a dissappointment especially in the States. Every time I read about it, the fact it has not sold a million is one of the first things mentioned. So I wouldn't be shocked if SOA was an attempt to be more popular than artistic. I think ATYCLB is one of their worst, and NLOTH and Pop rank among their best, so I would love to be wrong.

You pretty much nailed it on the head. U2 have worried too much about what other people think since Pop. I like all the albums, but unlike you, I almost love ATYCLB, and think NLOTH is close to being their worst. Of course, a "bad" U2 album is like bad Pizza...still pretty good. I agree that Pop was one of their best, as my user id would suggest. Being Reactive instead of Proactive is a sad, sad thing. Being a Prince fan, I have struggled with his bad career choices year after year. At least with U2, they usually remain on the right path. This time is critical though. Not too many acts have survived past the age of 50. The Rolling Stones have received a lot of bad press for many of their post 50 albums, but most of them are OK. I have a hard time accepting OK for U2. Just my two cents there.

I don't mind a pop album full of hooks, but if they go the "almost sell out" route, than it better be good. I seem to think that a mix of songs from all the sessions would be the best thing to do. Release the best 75 minutes for one nice Jumbo CD, and then if they have another 200 or so minutes of leftovers, release that at the same time as a Super Duper outtakes set, so that the next time they make an album, it will be all new songs...no leftovers

This is a nice place to start:
    Stingray Guitar Intro
    Every Breaking Wave
    North Star
    Boy Falls From The Sky

He said several songs from the new album have already been released, including 'Mercy', 'Every Breaking Wave', and 'Boys Fall from the Sky'. The album has been given the title 'Songs of Ascent'.

He also defended sales figures for No Line on the Horizon , which he claimed had held up “remarkably well” despite many stories saying the album was a flop and a comment by producer Steve Lillywhite that it did not work.

Lillywhite later disputed the accuracy of the comments .

It sold “roughly” five million copies McGuinness revealed.

Their 2004 album 'How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb' had sold twice that number.

The promotion of the album was badly disrupted when Bono hurt his back in May, was operated on and was sidelined causing the cancelation of the tour

I would guess and I expect...

I hope he is right but we have seen interviews like this so many times that I dont belive a new album is coming until I see it in the shops

Can't wait for it, especially the tracks Mercy & TBFTS are killer!!!

I remember when No Line was released and word was that this would be released not long after, perhaps the following year or so, i'm glad it's taken a little longer, so it feels more like a proper next album rather than some filler like with Zooropa, not that it's a bad album as such, could have been alot better imo.

  5. Too many time to make and release the album means too much production and over-cooking of the songs...

  6. On the flipside, had it been rush released, it could have just felt like an after thought type of release with not alot of substance.

  7. But why Mercy we all know Mercy already. And will it be the Mercy we know from HTDAAB or with changed lyrics which was peformed live during the European Tour ?

The "substance" of the album/EP/whatever depends on the quality of the songs it contains. And the quality does not neccesarely depends on time. The quality on the Zooropa songs (written and recorded in a few months, between legs and concerts) is widely admitted superior to the quality on the HTDAAB songs (written and recorded in a +3 years gap).
I don't think that "rushing" the release of the EP/album/whatever is a bad thing - I'd say it's even positive.

I beg to differ in regards to the quality between No Line & Zooropa, NLOTH kills Zoorpoa, just my opinion off course.

  10. My opinion is the opposite (I said HTDAAB by the way) but no worries, just a matter of taste

  11. Ooops, my bad.

I also think HTDAAB is also far superior to Zooropa, which to me is a bit of a mish mash of songs, even features a song not sung by U2, i think i've probably listened to Wanderer about 3 times in my life, to me it's just not U2, but like i said, not that it's a bad album, just not as strong as what it could have been, a few of the songs lack a bit of quality.

But i'm more of an oldschool fan, and the albums released in 00 sound more like the 80's style in which i grew up faling in love with the band....

  12. Of course, I've grown listening to The Joshua Tree and War virtually everyday. The 80's are the basis of everything. But the 90's sound and attitude (attitude!!!) rock harder than the soft-U2 that we've had since 2000 They've only come back since 2009 I think/feel. And that's why I prefer a 90's-ish release a la Zooropa than a 00's-ish one
