  1. A new politics topic - please try and refrain from bringing up the "Americans are stupid, ignorant & fat" diatribe

    Anyway, any ideas for topics? Aung San Suu Kyi and Burma? Obama's presidency?

    For me, there's a big argument in Australia going on over legalizing same sex marriage.
    Which is quite interesting, especially as going from the discussion on one of our big news websites most people have no idea and argue foolishly against it from a religious perspective and other simply are for it because they think they're well-adjusted, educated, intellectuals and consider the other side to be religious nuts and rednecks.

    When in fact the isue is far, far more nuanced that that.

    So what do you people think? I know most Euro countries have legalized gay marriage.

  2. Well i'm a big US Political Junkie, so for all of you guys I might be able to provide a cool insight. I actually do a lot of volunteering for campaigns (Most recently the re-election campaign for Deval Patrick the Governor of Massachusetts) and I really enjoy the subject.

    From my perspective, I'm not seeing much in the way of nuances. No one has yet to give me any good reason why same-sex marriage shouldn't be legal. "Because God said so" is not a good reason. It might be a reason why certain churches wouldn't perform same-sex marriages, but it should not be a reason why it can't be legal for secular services.

  12. I'm fully behind gay marriage etc. and don't think there's a good reason in existence to prevent it.

    As it happens, I was looking at the old Pol. Discussion thread the other day because of the student protest against a hike in tuition fees that happened last week. Although I'm fully behind it, I was completely against the form of violent protest carried out by a minority, but yeah, was wondering who heard about that around the world?
