We've reported, and you likely know by now, that U2 is issuing a limited-edition vinyl next week called Wide Awake In Europe. The three-track record is being sent to independent record stores across North America as part of Record Store Day; some UK and Ireland stores are also expected to have it. The release date is Friday, November 26th. But U2 fan Mike S. has managed to get his hands on a couple copies of the record already, and took the photos below. (thx to Jose for help)

Our question: If this record is said to be limited to 5,000 pressings, how come Mike has numbers 5500 and 5501? (see third picture below)

UPDATE: A contact at Universal Music has answered this question for us. Here's why:

"During the manufacturing process, some jackets get damaged during the numbering process. These jackets are destroyed, but we do not go back and re-set the numbering machine for each damaged jacket. We simply run numbers past 5,000. If we didn’t do this, we would end up with much less than 5,000 total units."
