1. I can imagine them doing a Springsteen and going until they're 60 or so, but before they're 70 would be nice, if only so they don't turn into a "we have nothing new to offer so we'll play the hits" Rolling Stones type band.
  2. Are they not contracted to Live Nation to do another 2(?) tours after this one?

I could not bear the thought of going to a concert knowing that would be the last time I saw them!
  3. In fact, I would LOVE to attend their last show. I don't quite like the fact of it actually being the last show, but I'd like to attend it.

Springsteen kind of got to the same point on his last tour he only played a 2 or 3 songs per show off of his most previous album. I wouldn't mind U2 doing something like a farewell tour, even playing albums like Springsteen did on the last leg of his last tour. For it to work they could only do it once though. Don't drag it out or keep going on forever
  5. On a related issue, what would you prefer ?
Announce their retirement and say "this will be our last tour"
Or saying after a tour "this was our last tour"
    ?

I think it's not that easy as it sounds...
I mean... People would kill for tickets if they announce it and everything would be very weird and emotional the last time you'll see them.
But if they don't announce it, people would be mad if they haven't seen their last show.

Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen or Neil Young all put on incredible live shows. If you don't want to see old people, good for you, leave the tickets to others.

But apart from the few that you mentioned, most concerts by 60 year olds have no energy.

Id prefer they announce it first

I would prefer the second one. This way you won't have everyone emotional and nostaglic. And a farewell last concert would be a greatest hits set if they announce their retirement before the tour.
  9. I don't think U2 would ever do a greatest hits tour. As the band frequently says, they're only interested in the future, and they feel their best work is in front of them. I do think that U2 wouldn't outright say "this is our last tour", but I think they would hint at it. They would definitely hint enough to let the big U2 fans know that this is the last time they'll be seeing them.

A close friend of mine with whom I've attended my last U2 shows, says that those "hints" you're meaning are happening right now. He says this is their last tour and that's why they're pulling out this tremendous show, and travelling all around the world in a way they hadn't done before (various legs in America and Europe, long residences in Oceania and South America, etc). And maybe ending the tour in Dublin (as Larry has supported since 2009) is the biggest hint.
  11. TI thought that at the show last week, they gave off that hint several times particularly just before HMMKMKM and Streets.

But why retire when you're still pulling 60 000+ crowds everywhere you go, still plenty of great ideas to go and releasing the best music you've released in many years? You wouldn't break a winning formula. I really hope they don't do a Strolling Bones act and still going when they 65 playing the same songs over and over and you can see just how 'day in day out' that is for them.

If they absolutely had to, they'd do smaller shows, play Levitate at every show and keep it low-key. But they're just not at that age yet - many singers are still pulling great crowds and bands of their age, but keeping it lower-key and not doing the massive setups and stages they used to. If it was their last show, I would do absolutely everything to get there.

U2 back in the clubs? Hell yes.

you know, Sergio, I'm thinking something similar to what your friend has said. The hints are there, subtle but if you listen closely as we over here (the bootleg fanatics ) do, you hear them. And my feeling tells me that somehow this might indeed be the big fairwell tour. In a way. I can't nail it down, just a feeling. Maybe that has been the reason why I have been travelling all over Europe for over a year now to catch as many shows as possible. If my feeling proves me wrong in the end, even the better. But... yeah. Just a feeling, but what your friend has said. The hints are there.
