1. It's such a shame, isn't it. With all the good technology, we should be making the best sounding albums anyone's heard!

It would cause too many headaches for me to work out which album is mastered the best, but the worst mastered album I've listen to is Riot by Paramore. (My brother's CD).

I won't be listening to that. Or maybe I should for the engineering and see just how bad it can be.

Thriller, apart from the piss-poor songs on it except Beat It, Billie Jean, Lady In My Life and Baby Be Mine has a decent mastering job. Doesn't come close to Off The Wall, Bad, Dangerous, History or Blood On The Dance Floor.

Absolutely. The albums now should be dynamic and not over-compressed. I guess it shows the more technology you have, the more you like to mess around with it and then wonder why there's a backlash. 'Cos not only does it sound crap, it gives you a headache.

I do not own Off The Wall but I've heard a lot of positive things about it, and the songs that I've heard from it are all great and the production on those songs I've heard are great, I wouldn't mind picking that album up next time I go to JBHiFi.

I'm waiting for the remaster later this year with even more songs. Don't get the new album if you don't want to be disappointed.

We should probably move this out of this topic so it doesn't get flooded. Bump up the MJ topic or general chat as I will in a second. Maybe even some brand-new stuff you've never heard.

I agree. These people don't know how volume controls work. Another bad thing is auto-tune being used by producers for singers who have no talent. Auto-tune should be used only for effect, not by people who can't sing.

Autotune can work if it's used in moderation, not all across the song.

I do wonder at times if it's the band or the producers wanting it to be louder. Surely the band have to sign off on everything.

I like most of the songs on Thriller. Bille Jean is a masterpiece and I would even call it the greatest song of the 80's, but that Paul McCartney duet is god-awful. Don't understand why all the Micheal Jackson fans call the album a masterpiece.

You'd be surprised how many fans think Thriller is overrated. They usually go for Dangerous, History or Off The Wall. Bad was a far better album if only for the inclusion of Streetwalker, the bass from BJ and the demos from Thriller (which I remember someone wanted $700 a song for). The 90s is where he really exceled.

How about an example of how well recent albums can be mastered - a rip from a retail CD?

Yes, auto-tune can sometimes work well. Daft Punk are an example. So is some of the more modern Prince songs. But I do not like it when talentless people like Kesha use auto-tune. People like her need to find a different job.

And I have the feeling that most bands do not know what a louder mix or care about it. Which is a shame.
  10. I'll been continuing this in the general chat.

Kesha's songs use the exact damn beat. Get a new beat!!!

We should try getting back to the vinyl stuff and mastering too. I find the loud mixing off-putting. There comes a time when it can be loud. Loud is cool, especially for metal. But when it gets so loud it gives you a headache from the clipping and the distortion - maybe in ambient or piano or space rock, that's not cool. I wish more bands would go for Melodyne or the Talkbox. That owns in Sweet Emotion - ''Sweeeet emoshiiiiinnnn...''.

Yeah might move it to General Chat. Good idea.
  12. Wow, this topic went straight to hell. Is vanquish Bob? And since when is "audiophile" an insult?
Also, what's this mysterious 7" version you're talking about?
    Craving for answers.
