  1. Just saw 2001: A Space Odyssey for the first time in years. Truly awful film.


  2. To each his own. If you have the patience/capacity to understand Kubrick and assess elements of a film and the filmmaking process, symbolism, etc, and not just storyline- it's actually nothing short of brilliant

    Also, you having seen it for the "first time in years" at the age of 15 doesn't really have your brain in a fully developed stage at the first time you viewed it, so give it a few years and come back to it. A course in film study will improve the experience greatly; I say this from experience of my own.

    Just finished watching Anchorman with a group of friends- never gets old!

    I've already done film study at school, but can't do it anymore because it got cancelled

    And No, I don't think my opinon of this film will change. As you can probably already tell, I think 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of the most overrated films of all time. (Although the only person in the house who liked it was my father. This is because he read the books and saw 2010: The Year We Make Contact) Each scene was overlong and uninteresting(talk about patience!)

    I have to say it was directed well, looked stunning and was very innovative, but you need a good story to go with those visuals.

    I'm not trying to be patronizing, but you do get the story, right? Because its the greatest, subtlest twist of its time..
  8. I feel like HAL and the computer vs. man aspect of the movie is the boring part, to be honest...I much prefer the symbolism behind what the monoliths are, where they're discovered, and what happens to Dave.
  9. I agree with Matt. 2001 is nothing but a brilliant story in a great, shiny envelope, there's nothing bad you can say about it (specially if you consider it's like 45 years old)... Really smart argument, superb filming&directing job and subtle strokes of surrealism and hidden symbolism every now and then: what else can you ask for a film?

  11. I'd also recommend The Fifth Element on that score. And I rather liked 2010, too. But 2001 - well, what's to add to what's already been said? A truly great film made by a truly great director.
