  1. I don't hate the MJ Blige version of One, I just don't like it. I seriously hate SBS with JayZ, that hurts my ears.

    I also have a very wide range of music I'm into (and listen to on an almost daily basis); pop-rock-jazz-classic-electronic to name a few.

    I think it's got to do with the fact that when other artists touch U2 songs, it often feels like blasphemy or something.

    I agree. Especially Sunday Bloody Sunday which is such an important song in the history of U2 and has unique feelings for the band i feel like Jay-Z has no place in it. Although the real Sunday Bloody Sunday died in 1987.

    I do not hate hip-hop and R&B (unlike some here), I just don't get Mary J Blige.

    It's cool. I think it's possible though to like a wide variety of music (you should see my music library) and still think the MJB version of One is a mess. Personally, I don't get all the hate for the version of SBS with Jay-Z either. I thought it was great, especially the one from Berlin. I think there's something about it that says "not just your struggle but all our struggles".

    But people like what they like and haters gonna hate.

    no, it can be true enough at times.
    i've got more idie records than i care to admit i spent money on, including (ghasp!) 100's of both local and national punk albums. i just think U2 spawns such huge emotions (myself included) and are so unique that a favorite song or even a snippet is sacred to some ppl (again, myself included lol)
    one version of a song is great to someone and awful to another, regardless of the genre mix

    Well said. And I'm so happy that someone else likes that version of SBS. I love Jay-Z so of course this duet excites me, but I think it says a lot for "coming together" and solidarity when you have two icons from two very different worlds coming together for such a powerful song.

    On a somewhat unrelated topic, Jay and Bono are pretty good friends and Jay really respects him. He speaks very highly of Bono and their friendship in his book "Decoded".
  12. i personally don't like hip hop and related at all so i don't like jay-z but of course i'm much respecful about him or others making this kind of music and even more respectful about who listen to it but .. there's one but ...
    for me, in my way of thinking .. maybe closed, fundamentalist in such a way (sometimes i come to be talking about U2), there are some "sacred" things that shouldn't be touched, things that are U2 and all they mean .. in these there is One, Sunday and especially the "no more" moment, Bad, Pride and others ..
    i would be disappointed also if not was jay-z but everybody else .. springsteen for making a name.
    Sunday with jay-z? "ok" for one show but not to put on a album
    that's my way of thinking about it, no hate at all.
