The energy of the audience has nothing to do woth age, I'm not even convinced that a U2 audience is older than on other bands. During the concerts I've been to the crowd was pretty mixed.
I think it rather has to do with the album they promote, the selection of songs and the performance on stage.
The problem with the Vertigo Tour was that they promoted one of their weakest albums. And of this album quite a few songs just don't work well live. No matter what you think of album versions or lyrics, songs like SYCMIOYO, Miracle Drug, All because of you, Original of the Species or Yahweh just don't work live.
The old classics like Pride, With or Without You, Sunday Bloody Sunday or Streets were played pretty uninspired.
Even the old songs, which were the major surprise of the tour didn't really work out well. Especially on the first gigs a lot of people didn't seem to even know tracks like An Cat Dubh or Into the Heart...
And the fact that one felt being at a political campaign rather than a rock concert didn't make it better.

I'm not loving that post at all .
I was at 5 different gigs this tour and I can tell you now , their fanbase is older.sure there'll always be the younger crowd but they are small in comparrison .for the first time in my life I was asked to sit down at the 2nd Dublin gig .The stands were full of people in their mid to late 30's onwards .
the cost of tickets is a big issue. The cheaper standing tickets are snapped up very quickly and the seats are very costly for younger people.Plus people have grown up supporting u2 for 25 years so the fanbase has to be older
Another problem is ticketing in general .I don't know if you guys on here realise this or not but there is a worldwide organisation that earns millions from events and they have major stakes in companies that take care of ticket sales for sports and music .They market these tickets as "corperate" and charge what they want .The volume of tickets that went on sale on the blackmarket because of this meant that this tour was pepered with large areas full of people who had never seen or been to a u2 gig before but went because it was a corperate event .The row on front of me the 1st croker nite was empty for the first 20 minutes of the gig untill they finished in the bar !!! The company I work for had 30 tickets for each nite and they raffled them off .There were people in that group that didn't see a bit of the gig .All of that transpires onto the band ...how can it not .They look at the pit and its jumping and then 100 yards behind them is a 1000 seats full of shirt and ties

Yehwah and OOTS are superb live songs .Ok they aren't as anthemic Pride or Party girl but the yehwah at Croker was stunning .The bootleg quality doesn't do it justice ,but the Videodrug video does give some semblance of what it was like

  4. Thanks Yeah for the link, there's some good stuff there.

Sorry if I made some of you a little defensive about this topic, I was just thinking about some of the factors that may have contributed to the energy reduction in the Vertigo tour, and I thought I would share my views with you, although you have also made some excellent points.

I agree with you. Thats why I brough up the age issue. I noticed when I went to see them live that every one appeared to be older than me, and even the dvds of the vertigo tour there appears to be old or older people apart from a couple of exceptions. Plus many of you have said that out of your gang of friends you are the only one who is into u2 or willing to see them live.
  6. . Is it just me or is this like the smiley version of The Fly.
  7. something read in another topic ..

    U2 is U2

    LOL
  8. Just wondering: I'm making some mix CDs for my Mom (she almost has U2's entire catalog) and I have three sort of "themed" playlists going for future CDs one is just a regular one featuring album tracks or b-sides, another is of remixes and alternate versions and the last is made up of covers done by U2. Just wondering where we would put "Always". Can it go on the regular one or should I keep it on the Remixes & Altnerate versions one?

    * I have the day off today so I am just fooling around with songs.

I would say alternate versions...technically it is a demo of sorts of Beautiful Day...

I'm with you on this one. Whilst I adored An Cat Dubh/ Into the Heart and Electric Co. barely anything else (past the first two songs) felt right, on top of that to hear a song as Transcendent as Streets be linked to a struggle on earth (and worse - a political movement) was truly angering.

The magic is back with 360, though its not to late to turn it into a concept tour and bring band ole' horns.
  11. Anybody know what radio station broadcasted Dublin 93?
