Yes, they need to stop trying to have lots of big hit singles at the age of 50 (Bono, Paul McGuinness I'm looking at you) and just do whatever they want to do, not what they think the public wants.

  3. Actually I've always found both those songs excruciatingly awkward in their construction, the sort of simplistic nonsense a music student writes when they're first learning about composition. But perhaps I'm misunderstanding what you're talking about. What is it you mean by 'melodic' in this context?
  4. I think it means it's a nice tune to it, that's my interpretation of it anyway

For artists like U2, too much rational thought is absolute creative death. The piecemeal disconnectedness of the album feels like the band is trying to please everyone. Everyone liked Vertigo, right? So let's have Get On Your Boots. Everyone liked With or Without You, right? So let's have Moment of Surrender out of the same mould. And so on and so forth. There's nothing there they haven't done before and better. It's like a buffet selection of U2 hits, though the tastiness of each individual dish is a little hit and miss.

Don't get me wrong, I think there are some killer songs on NLOTH, but they've written killer songs before. What I think NLOTH isn't is a killer album, worthy of the creative talents of the people who worked on it.

I'm just reading U2byU2 (for about the 9th time ) and during the Achtung Baby section, they talk about how they didn't care what anyone thought about the new album (AB), because they were proud of the direction they chose, and if it was a disaster and people hated it, they knew they went out with a bang and with a great creative album. Now days I think they're too worried about being on top and remaining relevant to have the same state of mind as they did when they made Achtung Baby. Back then it was all about creativity, and the direction THEY wanted to take with THEIR music. Shame.

  6. Yes. You can sing along with it. At least WITS anyway.

  7. I'm not sure I would rank a 10 for Stand Up Comedy, but Crazy Tonight (live mix) and Get On Your Boots (live) will definitely get 10s.

    1. No Line On The Horizon - 8.5/10 (Semi-acoustic live version) 9.5/10
    2. Magnificent - 9/10
    3. Moment of Surrender - 10/10 (probably higher if they actually played the whole song live)
    4. Unknown Caller - 7/10
    5. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Crazy Tonight - 8/10 (live remix- 10/10)
    6. Get On Your Boots - 6/10 (live version - 10/10)
    7. Stand Up Comedy - 7/10
    8. Fez-Being Born - 10/10
    9. White As Snow - 7/10
    10. Breathe - 4/10
    11. Cedars Of Lebanon - 8/10

Also, what's with all the hate on HTDAAB? I don't think people really gave the album a fair chance. It was very well developed and I personally liked the sound a lot.

    Top 5 albums

    1. Joshua Tree
    2. How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb
    3. The Unforgettable Fire
    4. Pop
    5. Achtung Baby
  8. I don't think the live version of Crazy Tonight should be counted, because it's pretty much a different song.

I think they are too old and too staid or conservative to make something like that. It's sad but maybe normal in their age. Worse are Bono's statements about "like anything we've done before" or "metal, trance and hardcore" and so on... If he wants to be honest, he would say "We will make album and if it wouldn't be in top 5 and at least one top hit, we failed"... because that is the way it is...
