  1. Huh, I think the sound quality is really good! Did you listen to it with Apple iPod Earphones?

The standard Apple earbuds are pretty dire, but upgrade them to a decent pair of (preferably noise-reducing) headphones and you'll get as good a sound experience as it's possible to have with mp3 files. Of course if you're wanting flac etc on your portable music player, you're going to need to go with something else.

    I can only second this. Earbuds make all the difference. The original apple ones deliver a quite average sound quality. The most expensive earbuds aren't necessarily the best ones. I've tried many different ones, and often the middle price range deliver the best sound, full and clear. I wouldn't trade my ipod for any other mp3 player - but that's maybe because I can't afford a new one for the next 300 years
  5. The Apple earphones are pretty much useless if you're into drums, bass and guitar. The only thing I found they offer over any other phones without spending a small fortune ($40+) is that they do audio recording for the iPod. I wouldn't bother with them otherwise.

    The Sony ones are usually pretty good (I use a pair of white ones with recording ability and have little blue bits on the actual phones) but again the iPod EQ sucks too; I wish I could do my own. Treble Reducer or Small Speaker settings are the only ones I'd ever use or Flat if I had to go to save battery life. I'd say check out Creative, Sansa, iRiver, Zune or anything else besides iPod. Anyway - iPods cater to the masses, so they sound acceptable to those million people and as long as it plays the song, that's all they care about.

    Also check your encoding settings - 192kbps LAME is probably your best average setting - anything higher than 256Kbps CBR LAME is probably a waste. I convert from WAV to that and get a good sound, then mp3gain it to 92.0dB if you want to get rid of the audible clipping and have it sound quieter keeping dynamics lost at louder volumes. And don't convert with iTunes or WMP - go EAC coupled with Foobar2000 and see the difference.

    Anyway - I spent too much on my iPod, so I gotta keep it for a few more years before I go looking for something new and better-sounding. Hopefully, lossless vs battery will improve in a few years time so then we can have 10 hours of lossless at absolute minimum without worrying about battery.

    It was apple. I thought that was the best since it was the so famous apple but checking the posts here a lot of people think that the big difference is made by the earphones. Is that so? Would you suggest me to buy an ipod touch (don't care about the apps, so i wouldn't pay so much for an iphone) and combine it with a klipsch image s4 earphoes?

    I've read that the bass in that earbuds is awesome. Would be great to check Adam's bass with those earphones!

  7. since ur not fussed about apps then an ipod touch would be overkill wouldnt it? Anyway, i think its all about the headphones, when i upgraded mine to a mid price pair similar to these i started hearing parts of the song i never knew were there (like in Fez-Being Born, the fuzzy noise) the bass with this type of headphone is also great and when u r using them u can hardly hear a thing around u. i was on a flight with a crying baby 2 rows behind me but i didnt even hear it until it was time to land

  9. If you really want a lot of memory for maybe lossless music, or just a lot of music, there's iPod Classic with 160GB.
