1. I think you need to realize though that a "beginner CD" should include all of their greatest hits. (At least for the first CD).

Before my Mom and I went to see them in Toronto in 2009, we made a list of the songs she would like to hear in concert. For Mother's Day that year I burned her a CD of those songs as part of her gift. (She was a big fan but knew really only the mainstream songs/singles, she never really bought CDs very often... guess it had something to do with funding two children! haha) So after that I began making her more CDs and throwing in other singles and songs I thought she would like. Fast forward to now and we nearly have their whole catalog burned off for her.

My younger cousin started to like U2 as well and I wanted to introduce her them. I was going to give her the two Best Ofs and U218 but I felt there were some great tracks/singles missing (especially from The Best Of 90-2000) and I wanted her to hear the stuff from No Line so I made 3 CDs: "U2 In The 80s", "U2 In The 90s", and "U2 In The New Millennium"
  2. i'd start with the obvious - War, Joshua Tree or Achtung...if he's not into them then he won't be into U2, but tell him to listen to only 1 to start = whichever he would be more inclined to enjoy, then branch out into the similar cd's in the U2 catalog before returning to finish which ever of JT, war or AB he did not listen to. Its like when i was getting into Dylan, i had a few compilations but the first studio cd i bought was Blond on blond, the others are spectacular but that remains as my favorite dylan studio album...if i had listened to another side or the free wheelin or even highway 61 first then i can only imagine that blond would have sounded even more impressive.
also, the audio from any live dvd will work better than any created comp.

    Give your friend the albums.

I usually send them clips according to which CD i´m addicted at the time... and little by little they build their own u2 catalog!
  5. Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. Here is what I ended up with:

    1. Where the Streets Have No Name
    2. Out of Control
    3. New Year's Day
    4. Lemon
    5. Pride
    6. One
    7. Gone (New Mix)
    8. Mercy
    9. Gloria
    10. I Still Haven't Found
    11. Ultraviolet
    12. With or Without You
    13. Luminous Times
    14. Moment of Surrender
    15. All I Want Is You

    1. City of Blinding Lights
    2. Two Hearts Beat As One
    3. Running to Stand Still
    4. Who's Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses
    5. A Sort of Homecoming
    6. Staring at the Sun
    7. Kite
    8. Angel of Harlem
    9. Red Hill Mining Town
    10. Drowning Man
    11. Vertigo
    12. Walk On
    13. Beautiful Day (Slane Castle)
    14. Sunday Bloody Sunday (Under a Blood Red Sky)
    15. Bad (Wide Awake in America)
    16. 40 (Live from Paris)

Unfortunately, my computer messed up and the last five tracks on the second disk messed up. It kinda made me mad since Bad is my favorite song, but hopefully he'll like this stuff and ask for more. I'm not sure if he will become a die hard fan, but hopefully I've given him some songs he will really enjoy for awhile. Thanks again for all the suggestions.
  6. There are other topics on this somewhere too, pre-No Line. I think I started one of them lol.... Might be worth a search fir anyone looking to do this
  7. 5/6 00's songs Nice list
  8. My playlist would be:

    Wake Up Dead Men
    The Fly
    When Love Comes To Town
I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
    Walk On
    The First Time

A 2 CD compilation of 25 songs it would be great for a first listen or to create a more familiar "relationship" with U2
  9. alright I've been assigned one of these... LOL looking at these for inspiration! I think I'm going to go with a 2 disc and fan made art but all of my ideas look like 360/2011/Glasto setlist knockoffs @___________@ it's been so long since I've made a U2 related mix cd and since I'm off U2 for a bit I thought this would be a good place to start xD
  10. Well, are you doing "hits" or "personal favourites." Is the inclusion of, say, "Mysterious Ways" necessary or can you substitue it with the superior "Ultra Violet?"

Without giving a list right of the bat, be sure to include all the hits from the 1980's, all the cool stuff from the 1990's, and, because you probably have to, the "Grammy songs" from the 2000's.
  11. Depending on the person, I give two out of the three discs I've compiled. The first disc has the well-known 80s sound, including songs like Pride and Streets. The second one contains tracks like Unknown Caller and One, the more soft love-orientated songs. The final one is the rock disc, for those who love songs like The Fly and Stand Up Comedy.

From my experience, my friends are most surprised of the second disc, because most of those songs are not well-known.

    CD 1
    01. A Sort of Homecoming
    02. New Year's Day
    03. Pride (In The Name of Love)
    04. Bad
    05. Where The Streets Have No Name
    06. I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For
    07. With or Without You
    08. One Tree Hill
    09. The Unforgettable Fire
    10. Heartland
    11. Sunday Bloody Sunday
    12. All I Want Is You

    CD 2
    01. Magnificent
    02. Moment of Surrender
    03. Unknown Caller
    04. I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight
    05. If You Wear That Velvet Dress
    06. Electrical Storm
    07. Original of the Species
    08. Sometimes You Can't Make It On Your Own
    09. When I Look At The World
    10. Grace
    11. Stay (Faraway, So Close!)
    12. One

    CD 3
    01. Ultraviolet (Light My Way)
    02. The Fly
    03. Mysterious Ways
    04. Rise Above 1
    05. Even Better Than The Real Thing
    06. Breathe

    08. Zoo Station
    09. Stand Up Comedy
    10. Vertigo
    11. Until The End of The World
    12. Discothèque
  12. I want to make it full of variety (80's, 90's, 00's with live tracks, remixes, and b-sides) as well as the classics, it might be difficult but I like the challenge ahaha. I like your suggestion Fabian and I think I'm going to essentially cut it down and rearrange bits of it! I'll comment again in a bit with my working list and see what you think!
