  1. On the Itunes Joshua Tree Live in Paris album, when Bono sings With or Without You, he stops in the middle of the song and breaks up a fight or something. He said, "What is this? Tear gas? I thought there'd be enough tears in this song." Does anybody else cringe when he says that? That is the cheesiest thing I've ever heard and Bono is supposed to be a rock star. Anyone?

    It is god awfully cheesy but in fairness he was only trying to diffuse a potentially volatile situation.
  3. To me, it seems like a great way to stop the fight. Cheesy as hell but wonderfully related to the song they were playing.

  5. I cringe nowadays when I hear Bono say "What a very special night, thank you very much. We will never forget this night" or something like that to the crowd on (almost) EVERY 360 show.

  8. I think it's really cool when he says that on the Paris DVD because he stops the situation with jerks in the crowd releasing tear gas.
  9. I think a better question is, does it bother U2 fans that most of what Bono says is completely scripted and/or recycled from night to night?

    Take this phrase : "Well this is a big place, but U2, and you, are bigger than this place". Pretty sure he said that phrase on more than half of the UF tour shows and JT tour shows.

    Or the whole "milky way" thing. That might've been cool if he said it once or twice, but to say it as much as he has its totally killed it!

    Usually it just makes me laugh, other times it bothers me how not every U2 show is really unique. There's nothing "special" about a lot of shows, and a reason behind this is because they're so scripted. Sure the scripted production provides an amazing show each time, but it sacrifices spontaneity to a huge degree. I always like it when an artist changes the show from night to night, acting on complete impulse and off of what they see or hear in the audience.

    Example, when I saw John Mayer a while back (Battle Studies Tour) there was a point where he read a bunch of signs out that people had made and that he could see from stage. It lasted about 10 minutes, just him making jokes and remarking on what people had written. I'm pretty sure he did this at more than one show, however it varied each time because people had different things written (obviously).

    Now I know Bono does that sort of thing from time to time, (The ZooTV phone calls are a perfect example) but I think it's fair to say he has more scripted phrases and speeches than ones that are impulsive.
  10. Everytime Bono says "Thanks for giving us a great life", I almost scream. Vary it up a bit, man!

    And, remember at a Vertigo Tour show at Madison Square Garden (can't remember the exact show), but he said to someone in the crowd - "put away your fucking phone! You're a concert!" which is pretty silly and childish.

    He must be a comedian. Comedians are full of recycled jokes...then you find out just how garbage they are, and figure 'Shit, this is recycled!!!'

    At the last show, he shouted out 'Thank you Melbourne, you've given us a great life.' Given I'm not from the city of those who try to get hit by trams on the main street, he clearly wasn't thanking me. How sad I was. But it's clearly only Melbourne who truly cared...given his statement, they've given them a great life.

    Bastards.
