There was an interview with Ringo in the morning in the local newspaper, and almost every other major Swedish newspaper had some feature on this concert, so it was a little bit of a happening. Personally, I learned about this concert a few months ago and knew that I wanted to go. I mean Ringo is 1/4 of the biggest band of all time, in other words, a fucking LEGEND!! So I had no doubt about whether to attend or not. I also happen to like the Beatles a lot.
So, back to the day of the concert... I went there with my father, we were there 18:30, one and a half hour before the concert. We got some of the last seats (the seats are really the best places). Then it was time to wait. The average age of the crowd was probably around 50 years old. A lot of middle age and older people, but also a few people around my age (15). The place got full (7000, some say 11500) and then, 20:00 they came on stage.
It started with It Don't Come Easy, which was a decent opener. The concept for the concert was that Ringo played some of his solo songs, and some Beatles songs and that the other artists in "the All Starr Band" got to perform a couple of their own songs. It worked very well. On the second song however, something went wrong with the sound, which led everyone to clap and scream like crazy. I wonder if the band understood what happened, or was very surprised by the clapping? I guess I'll never know. The sound was out for quite a while, almost two songs.
"The All Starr Band" is:
Wally Palmar - guitar, harmonica, vocals
Rick Derringer - guitar, vocals
Edgar Winter - keyboards, saxophone, vocals
Gary Wright - keyboards, vocals
Richard Page - bass, vocals
Gregg Bissonette - drums, vocals
I didn't recognize any of those names, but I did recognize a few songs. The best one of these was Rick Derringer, who was very good on guitar and played a few decent songs on his own. Gary Wright had a very good song, Dream Weaver or something. Wally Palmar was decent, but didn't seem to be very good technically, mostly played rhythm guitar. Richard Page was nothing special at all, and had A LOT of effects on his voice, I guess he couldn't sing. Gregg Bissonette played drums, and did it well. Edgar Winter was crazy but seemed to have a lot of fun, and was pretty awesome as well. Apparently, he was the first person ever to put a strap on a keyboard, and did some crazy solos and stuff. He also played saxophone well.
Ringo himself sang just fine, drummed very well, and was a very good entertainer. He also had a great sense of humor. He said things like “You’re the best audience we’ve had all day”, “You know, I just love it when you people when pictures of me, like, “hey this is what you looked like when you were younger””, he also introduced some songs saying that they were written by “that other band” he once played in... I wonder which band that could be...
All in all, I had a very good time!
