  1. Just as a follow up point. The songs from this decade that focus either on some specific political or personal issue that has a profound effect on Bono are in my opinion some of the best. For example, Walk On and it's obvious political connection, Kite which Bono wrote about his father. Sometimes You Can't..... which is about Bono and his relationship with his father. Even City of Blinding Lights which is rooted in the concerts in NYC after 9/11. Songs like these are the cream of the crop from this decade. We need Bono to get back to writing songs about things that have a profound meaning to him.

    I couldn't agree more. Where there is a genuine emotion, the songwriting that flows from it feels genuine too. It's not something you can fake. And while shallow faked stuff can and does sell, depending on how you package it, I think most of us came into U2 on the back of songs that touched us because they evoked a genuine emotion. There aren't a lot of songs post-2000 that do that. For me, there's maybe Stuck, Walk On, SYCMIOYO, Kite, and The Ground Beneath Her Feet that really speak to me in the way that a lot of the earlier work does.
  3. i think that part of the lyrical quality of the songs is sometimes hidden by the musical quality of the songs.
    neglecting the catchy songs for newvbie such as elevation vertigo boots etc, going a bit deeply some very good lyrics emerge apart of the ones already named .. Crumbs from your table (weak song but a fist to the stomach for me), Peace on earth, Miracle drug, Beautiful day (it can't be considered very good cause it's a positive song, i don't think so) ... and coming to No line the couple Moment of surrender/Unknown caller, Cedars, White as snow and Magnificent too.
    over the years his way of telling things has changed, his life changed like ours and also the world.
    he can't write another Like a song, for example, (sorry Sergio ) .. it would be out of his time (and mine too) .. even if i'm really happy if a young man can recognize himself in this song.
    waiting another One will remain only a hope but of course glad if i will be wrong.
    Dante Alighieri wrote the "Divine comedy" and others very good works but not at that level
    anyway i think that still very few songwriters can stand near even the current Bono.
    what he hasn't lost for sure, for me, it's his ability with words

    It's a nick, picked up many years ago for very silly reasons. I speak a little Italian, though I read it better, but I've never learnt it formally so it's all a bit random and suited to reading music and puzzling out Italian news pieces, rather than anything really useful.

    I agree that his songwriting has necessarily evolved over time and there are still some really beautiful lyrics coming out of Bono's head. Which is why it's so frustrating that the songs are less than the sum of their parts. In amongst the great lines are some godawful dross.

    Take Moment of Surrender for instance; it is so good and there are so many beautiful lines in there. And then you get to the bloody ATM machine, a line infamous in its banality. Someone should have told Bono no. I'm amazed no one told him no. As a song, it's probably a little dense and metaphorical to be a popular hit, but it was one verse (and some less dirgey music) away from being as good as any song they've ever written.

    Perhaps someone just needs to tell Bono "no" more often.

  7. if there was only one album i could ever listen to, for the rest of my life, it would be between ATYCLB and AB..

    i love the 00's from U2, and especially live, i think it is their best decade yet (Elevation and 360 tours = wow)
