Probably because the audio gets better compared to if you'd compress it twice which would kill it completely.

Question: Was the stream captured directly and saved as WAV (direct stream copy), or captured as MP3 320 Kbs.?

Converting a lossy source to flac doesn't make the quality any better, just increases the file size - It's Still LOSSY

Yes, that's obvious. But if it something lossy is recorded recorded in flac, and then converted to lossy, the flac will be better because it won't have been compressed twice. A better lossy if you will.

But, what's the point in recording a lossy source in FLAC when you can just record it in MP3 originally? That means you won't lose as much quality.

There is no point in that.

I think this source is actually the train_maniac source splitted and compressed again. That would mean these 320 kbit/s would be a lot worse than the train_maniac source.
