1. Just read from the topic about Bono and drugs... And found a little discussion about his voice and when it was as it best.

Vertigo tour is one of his best ever, in some views it is his best ever. Sure these days he dosnt have the same strength in screams and wide sound in his "basic" voice like he had in the 80's. But if we talk hitting high notes, holding notes for long time, singing techniques... Well then Bono's 5th leg vocals is the best ever.

    Here are some proofs

    - Bono did hit the HIGH C in "Wide Awake on Bad" several times on Vertigo tour. Also he sang the "Wide Awake" without probelms three times in the song a couple of times on Vertigo tour.

    - He also hit the HIGH C in "Don't you look back" on WGRYWH, something he never has done, not even on ZooTV.

    - He has never hold high notes for so long like he did on Vertigo tour("Touch" in BD 5 sec, "Sing" in SYCMIOYO 8 sec, "L'amoure" in Miss Sarajevo in 11 sec)

    - He now holds the chours in Pride, something he never even did on JT/LT tour.

    - One of his highest falsettos ever was done 2006-11-18 on Vertigo when he sang a snippet of Ac/Dc's highway to hell. It was an E5. And on MW he sang the word "Child" with the ZooTV falsetto sound. Togheter with WITS Bono showed that his falsetto is back.

    - He realy showed power when he sang the duet with Alicia Keys on the Oprah winfield show when he sang "Keep my AAAAAAAAAAAARMS down below". Now imagine him use that force in ISHFWILF.

    - Bono's voice on the pirate song "A dying sailor to his shipmates" is incredible, it realy makes you think of the song "Wild Irish Rose" he did back in 89. He realy has a very deep sound in his voice on that song.

Heres a mix with voice highlights from Vertigo tour I created for a while ago:

  2. You're right. Thanks for the post, it made me even more clear that his voice is getting better.
  3. nice litle Bono tribute....you're right, at some points his voice was just stunning!!
  4. Great topic, thx!
  5. I can't agree with you. I know it has got better from the PoP/Elevation tours. That's true. But for me his voice has no longer the VELVET key it had in the Joshua/Lovetown/Zoo eras. Maybe he reaches/holds higher/longer notes, but the key, the tone of his voice...

    Anyway thanks for the tribute.
  6. that's a really cool compilation of bono's voice!! incredible sound in his voice...

As I wrote above, he dosnet got the wideness in his basic voice and the same strength when he screams. But technical 80's Bono hasnt a chance. Listen 0:50 in the clip I uploaded, what a sound. The same with "keep my aaaaaaaaaarms down below" part(time 1:30), the same with 2:21 and 2:54..

But one thing I can't agree with you is Bono's ZooTV voice, on ZooTV he was only realy good on the two first legs and in the beginning of the third leg in 92. But he hadnt the strength and power like he had on JT/LT. In 93 he was veru worned out.

    What a shocking statement:

R.D.S (his voice is right on it through the whole show)
    Lemon
    Daddy's Gonna Pay
    Mysterious Ways
    Running To Stand Still
    etc
    etc
    etc

    His voice is awesome

    - Ok for the first Lemon is in falsetto and you can be worned out in the voice and still pull out a great falsetto(just listen to Sarajevo 97 when he use a a very strong falsetto in the "take me higher" part in EBTTRT, the falsetto it is stronger then most of the ZooTV performences of the song).

    - Bad, almost every 93 performence had the "Wide Awake" part in falsetto(it much easier to hit a note in a falsetto) and if he sang it normal he sounded very strained. The 92 performences was much stronger

    - EBTTRT, well have you ever heard him sing the "take me higher" part in non-faletto in a 93 performence, no. But in 92...

    - NYD, in 93 he talked the lines after the first chours, he used a low faletto in "news paper is true"(92 he screamed it and sang the lines, not talk)

    - In 93 he basic voice was alot tired, but he still managed to go up high but alot these was done by falsetto.

    - A fantastic show, but again compare the NYD, EBTTRT... from that show to 92 performences.

I don't put all these Falsetto parts down to a worn out voice. I think he just did them because he could and he enjoyed it. During Bad he only usually used falsetto for the first 'Wide Awake'. I'll agree that it would be abnormal for him to keep his voice at optimum levels during the course of 150-odd shows. I still think the falsetto was just a bit of fun and it set the 93 tour aparat from the 92 shows which were just Bono 'singing' as usual. A bit of variation is fine by me

The falsetto ruined the intensive with Bad... Bono always want to push his voice in the songs. But he had problem in 93 and it was mch easier for him to use falsetto instead of overuse it in "Wide Awake" just listen when he sings it the second time on the Dublin show, he sounds very strained. He wasnt able to hit the note high and clear and I think that was the big reason.

I can only agree when you say that the Falsetto WIDE AWAKE killed Bad on that tour
