1. Where is your review ?
    And the pics ?
  2. Ok, so exactly two weeks after coming back home I'm finally going to tell you how our trip to Dublin went .... I won't go into a lot of details as it would bore the shit out of you, so I will stick mostly to the places connected in any or other way to U2, and with the most notable landmarks of the places we visited. However, if any of you are keen to know more of our visit or any other insight on any of the places we were in, just ask. It would make me immensely happy

Since I am not posting all of my pics here, you might want to see the full Dublin album I have set up on Flickr, where all the photos are tagged with the date when they were taken, the camera (95% of them are from my Nokia N8, 2 or 3 are from Ana's Sony camera) which was used and the like.

So, making a long dream come true, my friends Daniel (he's got an account here, he is pridix) and Ana, and my girlfriend Miriam (also has an account, AIWIU2, although she doesn't have time for being online anymore) and me flew to Dublin last July 26th on a Ryanair flight:

We went up without problems and after 1 hour and 50 minutes of flight I had my first sight of the country I had been wanting to visit for the last 90% of my life:

(I took this picture from that angle only because I promised Kirsten I would do so).

Here's a video summary of the flight

Well, we arrived to Dublin eventually, got out the airport and did our little trip onto the city centre. In less than 15 minutes (the walking time from the bus stop to our hotel, at Aungier Street), I was already astonished by the greatness of O'Connell Street, O'Connell bridge, Bank Of Ireland, Trinity College and many other Dublin landmarks. We eventually got to our hotel, when a great sign greeted us:

    Black Irish humour

That night, we went out for a small walk around the Grafton Street zone and we found the first U2 landmark, the Dandelion Market plate:

We also found a very young busker -probably younger than us- who was just starting his nightly performance... And he started right away with Desire!! As expected, I joined him, I did harmonies throughout the verses and also snippeted "1969" (a la Lovetown), and he was loving it almost as much as I was. It was a fantastic welcome, first night, first U2 song out in the street. Nice

    ---

Next day we woke up early and started our turistic route through the city. Since our hotel was near Trinity College, that was our first stop. It surprised me as I knew it was the oldest university in Ireland, but I didn't expect it to be so wonderful.

We got out and started walking down Pearse Street. There, we stumped across a Chemistry exhibition on the Naughton Institute. Of course, we went in and had a great time - specially me, as a Chemist You can see some photos of the exhib. in the Flickr album. Then we crossed to the north side of town through Sean O'Casey Bridge, where we had the first sight of the Custom House and other interesting places from both shores.

Once in the north side, we had lunch and then we walked until we reached the Eastern part of town. If you know Dublin, you'll know that part of the city is the "worse" one, with the dirty docks, some unconvenient people, crumbling or abandoned buildings, and........ The Point Depot. The legend made venue.

The Point Depot (now called O2), where not only the legendary late-1989 U2 shows took place, but also where other famous artists like Bob Dylan, REM, Bruce Springsteen and many, many others have played and recorded fantastic shows. A very emotional place to be if you're a music lover.

At the feet of the Point Depot lies the East Link bridge, another famous location which appeared most notably in the Pride videoclip, and also gave the name to the Spanish U2 website called U2EastLink. The white paiting isn't on its floor anymore, but the bridge remains an important communication road between north and south parts of the city. The sight from there is also amazing, both to the west (you can see or make up most of Dublin's important places) and to the east (you can see the docks, the electrical station towers -which gave name to the so-called song, and also appeared in the Pride videoclip- and the Irish sea).
    ... ...

So we crossed to the south part of the town again, and headed to the nucleus of the U2 visit. After visiting the beautiful St. Patrick's Church (not to be mistaken with St .Patrick's Cathedral), we crossed the Grand Canal and got to the Grand Canal Docks sign, which appears on quite a lot of U2 photo shoots, more notably the inner cover of the Best Of 1990-2000 album:
     ...

Besides the Grand Canal Docks are the dams that divide the Grand Canal from the Liffey river, and that's where a lot of U2 photos were shot in the early 80s. Including the October album cover
... ... (of course we left a small October reminder):

And finally, after a short walk from the dams, we reached to THE U2 landmark. The HQ wall, U2 wall, Head Quarters, Hanover Quay or however you want to call them. The Hanover Quay studios, U2's current basement and the studios where most of their post-Zoo material has been recorded and/or mixed. Lots of fans have met U2 or members of their staff here, and it's a true pilgrimage location for U2 fans from all over the world. I had tears of pure joy and happiness in the same moment I placed my feet on that street. In fact, in that first visit I was so struck that I couldn't properly sign on any of the walls. I limited myself to writing a piece of lyrics from Like A Song on a paper placed at the opposite side of the street.
    ...

After that, the day couldn't get much better, so we just walked around the city for a while and then got back to the hotel. It all had been so much for the first day. That night I had a very sad U2-related dream that I might share on our thread some day

Next day (Thursday 28th) we went on a more traditional tourist rout. We decided to visit both Cathedrals (Christchurch and St. Patrick's) which were also at walking distance from our hotel, and we spent the whole morning doing so.

We also paid a short visit to Dublin Castle, had lunch, visited John Lane's Church (beautiful!) and then headed to the most visited (number of tourists / year) attraction of the whole Ireland: the Guinness Storehouse. As some of you might know, I am a strong Guinness fan, and this visit I had been wanting to do for years. It didn't disappoint me. Every step in the fabrication of Guinness was perfectly described in a succint but sophisticated way. I took around 100 pictures of the explanatory texts only! hahaha... They also gave us a free pint at the Gravity Bar, which offers a breathtaking panorama view of the whole city. Of course, my N8 was there to give proof (be patient when opening that pic, it's very huge, 8000 pixels wide and weighs 3 MB):
After that we were exhausted so, although it was only 7PM, we went back to the hotel

Next day (Friday 29th), we resumed our U2 visits, this time on the north side of town. After meeting Rocio (a friend of us who's currently studying in Dublin), we walked to O'Connells Bridge, and then followed O'Connell Street Lower to the north until we reached Earl Street North, where we turned right and stumbled across THE shop. Seriously applying to the most famous store in Dublin and one of the most famous in the world, the Bonavox Hearing Aids was the shop from whose name Gavin Friday (or was it Guggi? Can't remember) gave Bono his now worldwide famous artistic name.

We headed ourselves to the north, in seek of the holy Croke Park stadium, finding some interesting places in between:

We finally arrived to the huge Croke Park terrains, where we had some trouble finding the ticket store (when I say it's a huge stadium; I really mean that... Its surroundings are very big too) but we eventually could buy some tickets for a guided visit. It was worth 10 times the money we paid. Not only it's a sports&music monument, but it's also a true piece of Ireland's history. No need to go into further explanation here, but just saying that the Sunday Bloody Sunday events happened here it's enough, isn't it? I enjoyed the visit immensely, and also the few U2 memorabilia which was on some of the walls!

Once we visited our Croke Park tour we started to walk heading north-west... Our destiny was, basically, where it all began 35 years ago:

Mount Temple Comprehensive School. The school where our four idols studied, the place where Mr. Mullen placed a note asking for some band partners, the place where a band called "Feedback" played their first concert on an October of 1976 evening... Well, the place where it all started. Very emotional, believe me. Moreover, the school itself is a beauty! We also enjoyed ourselves a lot there, even got inside the old part of the school (which was totally empty and almost abandoned) and even got to post our own imitation of Larry's note Also, we couldn't leave that place without leaving a small reference to U2... So now the school is called MoU2nt Temple Comprehemsive School

After the Mount Temple thrill we decided to go downtown and visit some Temple Bar and surroundings. On Grafton Street we found a mindblowing band consisting of two brothers: one played guitar, the other played bass, and both sang AND played drums solely with their feet. I couldn't believe my eyes or my ears. Awesome. We also got into the Hard Rock Cafe where the famous Zoo TV Trabant is hung by the ceiling, and we also walked by the Wall Of Fame , the Bank Of Ireland, etc.
     .

Next day we decided to move out from the city, and took the DART up to Howth. We'd been told it was well worth a visit, and god, it didn't disappoint at all. As their touristic ads say, "Howth is Magic" I loved everything about that tiny sailor town, from the harbour and its seagulls to the dock's breakwater to the panoramic sight over Irish sea and Ireland's Eye (the small island in front of Howth) and of course the cliffs! By that time, we had decided we were not going to the Moher Cliffs (more of a lack of time problem than anything else), so we decided we were going to the Howth cliffs instead. Not as imppresive, of course, but also worth a visit for sure!! I also got the chance to do my own version of the NLOTH cover.

From Howth we went to Malahide (they're less than 15 kms away), but this proved to be a not so clever decission: Prince (the artist) was performing in Malahide's Castle that night, and we only learnt about it when we arrived to the city!! It was awful since most of the streets were filled with fans, most of the stores were filled with fans, most of the beaches were filled with fans and everything else was mostly filled by fans or just random people. We didn't enjoy the visit to Malahide that much, although we promised we would pay a decent visit to it when we come back to Ireland.
The only positive point of the Malahide evening was when we went to the fields where people were gathering to go into the show (in front of the train station), and we took a funny photo of ourselves

Back to Dublin, that same evening, we took a walk around the zone where the Sweetest Thing videoclip was recorded: the Merrion Square Park (and its Oscar Wilde statue and tributes), Upper Merrion Street and surroundings. It all was suprisingly empty, although being late on a Saturday and the Celtics football match at Aviva Stadium might have something to do We took a lot of photos, recorded a Sweetest Thing tribute video and took a photo "with Bono"

That night we went to a pub called Foley's (very close to the current The Bagott Inn, at Merrion Row), where we found two guys pulling out some covers. If memory serves well they were playing some R.E.M. when we arrived, and we thought it was cool so we stayed. The funny thing is that they spotted our U2 t-shirts and started with WOWY right away! And after The River (Bruce Springsteen) and another song I didn't know, they played One! They weren't top notch, let's not fool ourselves, but hearing those lovely songs in that lovely (and warm!) night in that lovely city... That night holds a special place in my heart.

They did a encore, and when the singer went off the stage to ask for a pint, I approached him and asked if they could play Dirty Old Town and/or Stand By Me... He told me there was no problem, and they started their encore with Dirty Old Town! Everyone in the pub was singing along. And then they said "For our Spanish audience, xxx (uninteligible) U2 fans!! Thanks for coming along, this is for you!" and they closed their performance with... Stand By Me All I Want Is You!!! Not only he ignored my suggestion, but he chose THE song, OUR song!! I have no video of it since Miriam and me started to dance in the centre of the pub right away, but Ana did indeed take a photo of the moment

Next day (Sunday 31st) we crossed the Emeral Island from East to West, from Dublin to the beautiful atlantic city of Galway. We had been told (thanks again, Olof, Joe, Ronnie, Sonia, Peter! I owe you one) that it was very nice and worth the visit and damn hell, you all were right! We absolutely loved Galway, and I can't count the days until I'm there again! We spent almost the whole day there and visited most of the city, but we want to come back so badly!! We loved the Cathedral, the harbour, the river, the restaurant , the Claddagh Rings story, everything!

After coming back from Galway to Dublin, we did another visit to the U2 Wall, and this time I was in conditions of writing my own sign(s)

(that kind of greyish shadow you see surrounding all the text was nail varnish we poured over all we wrote to ensure a longer durability )
<a target='_blank' title='The four of us at HQ, U2 Wall' href='http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/97/poster13g.jpg/'><img src='http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/9494/poster13g.jpg' width="704" height="471" border='1'/></a>
Then, a short visit to the now abandoned Windmill Lane Studios, where the band recorded most of their pre-Zooropa material... It's sad to see such an historic place abandoned like that. But... Anyway, we were there anyway, showing some U2 passion like thousands of other fans have been doing since years ago

It had been a successful day in all ways so we had a great sleep and prepared for our last full day in Dublin. August 1st. We woke up and instantly felt a wave of rush and inminence like I hadn't experienced before. We had only one day left!! We decided we would do Kilmainham Gaol and Phoenix Park before heading to Bono's house in Killiney. We knew that the chances of meeting Bono or any of the guys were minimum since they had finished the tour only 2 days earlier in Moncton, but we wanted to maximize that chances as much as possible.
So, first step, we went to Kilmainham Gaol. You can read wikipedia if you wish to know more about the Kilmainham Gaol prison, now turned into museum and tribute. Basically, it's a former prison where loads of important prisoners (such as Eamon de Valera -later to become Ireland's president-, the Pearse brothers, etc) were jailed and sometimes executed for fighting against the British ocuppation. I don't want to go into political considerations, but a visit to Kilman gives you some thought food... Anyway, we loved it, our guide was awesome and I will be back!
Oh, by the way, Kilman is where U2 recorded the famous A Celebration video

At walking distance from the jail stands the Phoenix Park, the biggest urban park in Europe and another of the big points we didn't want to miss out. We rented bikes for the 4 of us and took a looooooong ride all around the park - which is an irregullar ellipse of 6 kilometers long for 4 kilometers wide. I won't bore you (more!) with details of every place we saw there, so I will let some pics speak for themselves

<iframe width="345" height="230" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/UGI-Il3_iaY?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Once we had lunch in the park and visited some interesting places (that lake was truly wonderful!), we headed ourselves to the closes DART station which happened to be pretty far away, so we had enough time to write the letter we were thinking of giving Bono, or someone related. We wrote it, we signed it and we put our hearts on it. Let's hope Bono receives it (full story later).

(Here you can read it more easily):

So, on our last evening in Dublin and Ireland, we took the DART direction Killiney, with a mix of feelings. Sadness, excitation, anxiety... We were actually going to see Bono's house and it was the closest we were going to be from meeting any of the boys - our excitement was understandable after all. 20 minutes after leaving Pearse Station we arrived to Killiney, and man, that was truly a beautiful place, regardless who lived there.

Since there was no mailbox at Bono's house walls, we actually knocked at that beautiful doors, only to find that there was nobody at home. Nevertheless, after some time hanging around the gates, a security guard opened the big doors (can you imagine our face when we saw that immense gates opening?) and angerly told us to go away. I did my best to calm him and I managed to do it, after which we had a pretty decent conversation. He told us that he couldn't pick up our letter, and we couldn't leave it anywhere inside the house, not even in the gates. I told him our story, where we were from, etc etc but the guy was inflexible. He also told us that Bono wasn't there, and that he actually wasn't even in Ireland. 360 Tour, 1 - spanish friends, 0. Anyway, we thanked him and decided to go up the hill in order to find some of the pubs or restaurants of the village, where I had heard that Bono and Edge use to hang around.
We found a small pub called The Druids Chair and we decided to go into... I managed to politely ask the chief/main waiter if he could "please please please" pick up the letter in order to give it to Bono himself....... and the waiter not only agreed, but started to tell us stories and anecdotes of Bono, his daughter and The Edge!!!!!!!!!!! We couldn't believe our ears. The man was so passionate about it that we spend easily 45 minutes speaking to him (his accent was crap, I'm the best English speaker of our group and even I had serious problems to understand him!)... And when we were leaving, he told me "Hey, wait...", he went on the inside and brought a t-shirt as a gift for us!!!!! A t-shirt from the pub he previously worked in... It was unbelievable. I still can't fully believe how lucky we were with this guy. By the way, he was called Kieran! It was an unforgettable evening, and the best way in which it could have ended up. We got sure that our letter would (will!) reach Bono and we won a new friend, and a new pub. Awesome. (you can see the t-shirt in the big photo - it's a black t-shirt with a beautiful drawing of the pub on the back).
<a target='_blank' title='The awesome Druids Chair' href='http://imageshack.us/photo/my-images/829/poster5l.jpg/'><img src='http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/3587/poster5l.jpg' width="700" heigth="450" border='1'/></a>

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/u2santos/6014430316/" title="Back from Killiney por u2santos, en Flickr"><img src="http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6017/6014430316_d4490fe187_m.jpg" width="425" height="240" alt="Back from Killiney"></a>
We left Killiney watching our last Irish sunset and arrived to Dublin by night. We weren't keen to going out so we just slept. I had a very disappointing and sad dream that night, in which I was (alone) in front of Bono's house, just looking at the beautiful gates... And then the gates opened -in the same way which had happened that evening- and Bono approached to me. I was so excited that I actually didn't shake hands with him or anything, I was just standing there. And he said something but I coudln't hear or understand him clearly enough. I tried to ask him to repeat it but then I saw I couldn't speak English at all, and all that came out of my mouth was a strange humming-like noise without any sense. It just didn't make sense. And then Bono looked strangely at me, smiled and got into the house again. I was like Noooo and tried to call him, but the same guard came in and told me to go away (I perfectly understood him, unlike Bono)... It was incredibly annoying and I was glad I woke up early.

I had set my clock alarm at 5:15AM to see the sunrise (I try to see the sunrise at every city I go to, and Dublin was no exception), but I was already awake by 5... I got out of the hotel and started to walk, walk, walk... Enjoying the empty city, almost like a ghost city... I love that feeling. I know waking up that early is a pain, but it's soooo worth the effort. I walked up until I reached the O'Connell Bridge and then started to walk to the east all the way down the Liffey river. Everything was calm, the weather was surprisingly warm, the sky was almost clear... Quoting Radiohead, "Everything (was) in its right place". I hold the memories of that morning close in my heart, and will always do.

I walked to the East until I -unconsciously or not- reached to HQ again. My third and last visit to the U2 Wall, on my own, completely alone... It felt like heaven.

I continued to the East, passed down the Grand Canal Docks once again, crossed to the north side by the East Link (there I saw the closest to a real "sunrise" that I managed to see, although the clouds wouldn't let me enjoy it like it should), passed the O2 while listening to Where The Streets Have No Name at full volume, walked by the north side of the Liffey until I reached the Famine Memorial and went back to the hotel...

I had walked for two hours and yet it felt like it wasn't enough. I was soon to leave the city and I felt like my heart was going to break in a thousand pieces... Nevertheless, we had a full morning until we had to leave to the airport, so we decided to enjoy it just walking around the city, buying some stuff, etc. We left to the airport by 12AM and our flight left Ireland succesfully at 13:55 local time. Ignoring my strong feeling of happiness for the fantastic week I had spent there, I silently cried while we were elevating. I had no spirit of taking any pics but my girlfriend managed to take two beauties with my phone:

So, after a sad, silent flight, we arrived back at Madrid, and funnily enough, as if Ireland or the plane crew wanted to greet us a last warm goodbye, the runway in which we landed was called............. yes, you guessed it. U2.
