I agree.Bono has said,"If we release 2 crap albums in a row,we will call it a day." The difference between these bands is,U2 had a resurgence with ATYCLB,and it continued with Bomb. REM,havent had a meaningful release in ages..and Im a fan.

I first saw REM open for the Police at Shea Stadium,in 1983.Their last relevant release was Monster.Up,Reveal,Accelerate and Collapse did nothing on the charts, and were kinda weak,IMO.Thats 4 straight releases that tanked.I totally lost interest in them.I saw them live many times in the 1980s.They were a great American band, live in Dublin is very solid......but after Bill Berry left, they just werent the same.
  6. Over the course of their career REM only ranks behind U2 for me. Their run of albums from Murmur through Monster was tremendous.
While Reveal and Around the Sun were real missteps, I have to say I think Accelerate and Collapse Into Now are very good - not ground breaking or new, but strong, 'best of' REM sounds/songs.

    They were great live too.

    I will miss their music!
  7. I listened to their greatest hits today. They really were a great band. That said, I have only Out of Time. Where should I go from there? What albums are their best?
  8. I'm not a huge fan of REM but Automatic For The People is a must have.

I thought New Adventures in HiFi had a few solid tracks - at least the three singles, BIttersweet Me, E-Bow The Letter, and Electrolite.
  10. I kinda like Around the Sun as well LOL Electron Blue, New York, Final Straw are amazing
  11. I'm devastated by this news, R. E. M. have been one of my favourite bands, a constant in my life for many many years. I have all their albums, have seen them in concert various times. I somehow sensed something like this was coming up after not having the band tour this year. Their last album is very good. I'm grateful for all the music they gave us over all these years, I'll miss them a lot.
