  6. It's from Rilke's Duineser Elegien. Bono used the first part of the First Elegy.

    English translation:
    Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the Angelic
    Orders? And even if one were to suddenly
    take me to its heart, I would vanish into its
    stronger existence. For beauty is nothing but
    the beginning of terror, that we are still able to bear,
    and we revere it so, because it calmly disdains
    to destroy us. Every Angel is terror.

    How do you know about that 2001-thingie? It's not in the credits so I wonder how you know that.

  8. I don't know it. Call it an educated guess or something. There's more than 20 books of Rilke translations out there. They all differ from each other. For example:
    Who of the angelic hosts would hear me if I cried out? (Boney) vs. Who, if I cried out, might hear me among the ranked Angels? (Cohn) vs. If I cried out who would hear me up there among the angelic orders? (Young)vs. Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels' hierarchies? (Mitchell) vs. Who, if I cried out, would hear me then, out of the orders of angel (Oswald)
    and so on for the rest...

    The only translation I'm aware of that is identical to "Oh Berlin" is the one from 2001. That's where I'm coming from... Could be completely wrong, though.

    Ah then I got you wrong. I thought you meant you KNOW that what Bono is "singing" in "Oh Berlin" was recorded in 2001 and used as "new" recorded vocals (like with "Wave of Sorrow'').

    So either Bono was ahead of his time (so to speak) and did that translation variety himself (highly doubt that) in a way, or this is indeed a new vocal track. I tend to the second option according to the voice comparison, but it's hard to tell anyway in myopinion.

    Are you a Rilke pro???? Or did you just spent quite some time on researching this? Thumbs up either way .

    I'm pretty sure, they added at least a new Bono vocal take. Same for the backing vocals and Keyboards from Dec Gaffney.

    I do like Rilke but I'm far from being a pro. I have a few books and translations left from the time at university, but that's all.
