Chris Martin has always adopted a funny (and thoroughly British) attitude about the band's critics, of which there are many. The New York Times once called them "the decade's most insufferable band" –that was back in 2005- and Martin himself even acknowledged that Radiohead take a machete and hack a path, and then Coldplay comes along and puts up a strip mall! See, he's hilarious!
But maybe the criticism is getting to him? He told SPIN that "Some people misconstrue our band just to be a commercial venture. They question the soulfulness of Coldplay because we've done okay… But in terms of how people perceive us I only pick up on the negative side of it. I always feel like the big bad outside world just…hates us." Aw, Chris Martin is now Chris Martyr! Just kiddin'.
Well, with Mylo Zyloto debuting at No. 1 with 470,000 copies sold, it's certainly good to be "hated," be it real or perceived hated.
