1. Hey guys,

As a Senior in high school, I'm beginning to apply colleges. I currently need to write an essay on a historical figure or artist that have inspired me. Naturally, I turned to the band and Bono. Of course I am going to mention the One Campaign, and how that is impacting the rest of the world, noting how it proves to all of us that One person can make a difference in the world and unite many millions as One. However, I do want to touch on other aspects of Bono's life that inspire. I'm just having trouble remembering some. The essay has to be under 500 words, but I'd love to see some of the things that Bono has inspired in you all, being the hardcore fans we all are.

    Thank you so much!

Maybe the whole idea of reinvention could be something to talk about. Bono has reinvisioned himself throughout his career, his imagine has always changed yet he's been able to maintain an artistic balance, and never strayed from his core beliefs.

But because a colllege would probably rather hear something about his activism, you could talk about the Sarajevo transmissions from the ZooTV tour, the Jubilee 2000, if you're talking about the entire band you could talk about Edge's Music Rising campaign, you could talk about the recent AIDS thing that Bono is up to, you could even go as far back as talking about Sunday Bloody Sunday and how Bono never really wanted to pick sides between Protestant and Catholics, but rather choose the side of peace and no fighting at all.

There's tons more you can draw from, but seeing as how it's only 500 words it might be tough to include everything. Basically Bono is an artist who's managed to maintain a public identity of being a rockstar and musician, while at the same time he's used his position in the public to help those who need it. That should be a point that hits home.
  3. Just write an essay on Larry's motorcycle safety campaign.

But yeah, with Bono there's DATA, One Campaign and Product Red. His participation in Band Aid, Conspiracy of Hope, Live Aid and Live8. His work in Africa during the 1980's with Ali.

You could also please everyone on here and talk about the public call for Aang San Su Kyi to be released. And as has already been mentioned, the Sarajevo video links and eventual uniting concert.
  4. Thanks guys,

I ended up using the Vertigo DVD a lot, saying how thanking the crowd and appreciating the fans ("You've given us a great life!", "We fell in love with Chicago....this is our drug, our Miracle Drug.") has inspired me to be thankful for everyone who contributes to my life.

This was followed by a paragraph on the One Campaign and the Suu Kyi campaign with Amnesty International and how it has taught me that just one person can make a difference when they get many to unite as one (I realize that it's not just Bono involved, but you get the picture).

As for Sarajevo, that was a great idea, and I wished I would have remembered it... I had used it in an earlier project 2 years ago in 10th grade while giving a report on the Bosnian Genocide... I included a video from a ZOO TV show from youtube. Needless to say, I got a 100
I don't remember if my next slide pn the slideshow was from the PopMart show or not, but it should have gotten at least an honorable mention haha
