1. Matt just said it all.

By the way Matt, you have a gift. In my opinion, you cleary have a connection with music itself. You know the paths, the codes, the bridges...it's almost like doing a puzzle. You see music in a different way and your posts (like the one above) are like a flash in a dark room, even if people agree with you or not.

That said, I have to say that happiness is what makes this album so interesting for me. I'm a optimistic person, and I'd say that less than 20% of the songs are happy songs or songs with a positive way to see things. So, even if I like all the other CP songs, the new ones bring me a good and different feeling that I appreciate more than the old ones.

  2. everything Matt said is perfect. nothing more to add.
  3. I notice that very often Coldplay songs are used for background music in tv shows, trailers for tv programmes etc, at least here in The Netherlands

Probably because as instrumental pieces, the music is quite versatile. The BBC over here have a unlimited usage license of music and often play edited instrumental pieces in TV shows.

There's a brooding to Coldplay's music that has made it great since day 1.

But as a whole, where Coldplay has succeeded so admirably before, here they fail.

Here's a man who knows his music.
  6. anyone staying up to watch them play the Grammys tonight? I know its Rihanna too, but I'm hoping they'll play something else too, Charlie Brown maybe...

When all is said and done though, Princess of China is going to be dominating the radio airwaves here in the US for the next several weeks, even if it isn't the next single could be a good thing though, I don't want Charlie Brown to become overplayed....

Thank you very much Aidan, I'm humbled!
  8. It's just the true friend. Just be proud of yourself

By the way, great performance of Coldplay at Grammys right now, even if I noticed CM voice wasn't perfect...
  9. I mean, how many times have we all said, "MAN, I'm SO happy! Let's listen to Coldplay!"

vs. how many times we've all said "Damn...something's just missing. Coldplay's got this, lets go boys. Parachutes."
  10. ^ +1.

And to Aidan... well, Chris' voice is hardly perfect since 2008... but that's been discussed to death already
  11. MX represents a shift in Coldplay's musical vision. Personally, I like their new direction. I've listened to every album they released and MX is the only album that I can listen to all the way through without saying that there are two songs on the album that sound identical. While I do realize that many fans like Coldplay for their mellow albums, I honestly think the mellow feel does not match Chris's personality.

MX does a great job in terms of shifting the band's musical vision to a more upbeat feel. Additionally, they have still managed to keep a bit of their unique sound and even some of their mellow feel. However, what this album has that all their previous albums lack is variety. All their other albums do a great job portraying the mellow feel, but that's honestly it. Viva La Vida was the first song that I really felt the band attempting to shift that tone and MX is really the continuation of that.

Also, I'm pretty sure people know this already, but this album does have a "narrative" per say. Initially, I was skeptical about Chris's remarks about wanting the fans to hear the album as a whole as opposed to just individual songs. But after I bought the album and listened through it a couple times, I think I can see what he meant. Mylo Xyloto (song), A Hopefully Transmission, and M.M.I.X. each serve as introductions to Hurts Like Heaven, Don't Let It Break Your Heart, and Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall respectively.

Anyhow, I think the album represents a step forward for Coldplay. MX has quickly become one of my favorite albums to listen to no matter how I'm feeling.

However, what this also means is that Coldplay has the capacity to play killer live sets because they can combine their new upbeat songs with their tried and true anthems. I'm hoping to be able to see them live, but at the moment I don't think I'm lucky enough to do that...

  12. That's why they keep performing The Scientist (one of their most mellow and cheesy songs, imo)? Or why this album has the most mellow songs since Parachutes (Us Against The World -THE mellowness-, UFO, Up In Flames, Up With The Birds)?

I agree that they've gone to a little more upbeat style, and that's not neccesarily a bad thing... But they have to be careful with the overproduction they end up having in some/most of their songs lately, because it kills them.

EDIT. 3000th post of the CP thread
