1. I was re-watching Bruce's Live From Barcelona DVD for the 835.984th time, and I had always noticed song parallels but wanted to think deeper about it, share my thoughts and get your feedback.

Rising / Rising Tour and ATYCLB / Elevation Tour were mainstream comebacks into the arms of America for both Bruce & U2, and their tours were both centered around healing a post - 9/11 world.

Here are the matchups I came up with:

Badlands = Streets (all-time live powerhouse climax)

The Rising = Beautiful Day (rising / elevation anthem, uplifting out of chaos)

My City of Ruins = Walk On / 40 (elevation tour version - the hymn of each album)

Jungleland = Bad (each band's landmark epic poem / live powerhouse)

Thunder Road = One (hope over hardened cynicism, one last chance to make it real / carry each other)

Born To Run = Pride (old-time anthem, memorable chorus, although not very similar lyrics)

    Thoughts?
  2. I had noticed (and I think I already posted about that) the similarity between The Rising and Elevation tours and their respective "healing anthems". It makes sense.

On the other hand, I had never thought of doing a direct paralelism between more songs... I can agree on Badlands/Streets and Jungleland/Bad, although I can't see the connection between One and Thunder Road.
  3. Not too sure about Born To Run and Pride either...Born to Run and Streets also share a similar connection I think, they usually come in the encore or near the close of the set.

I like to think of Pride in comparison to Tenth Avenue Freeze Out (you can relate them with the oooos by the crowd too).

As for another one, I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For can be Hungry Heart, the crowd usually sings a verse of both.

No Surrender = Elevation, so much enegy in those two.

I can't seem to make a comparison to Thunder Road :/
  4. Yeah, I think Thunder Road is a completely different animal on its own... I like your comparisons between Still and Hungry Heart, and between Pride and 10th Avenue, though!
  5. I'd say Born To Run and Streets are more related. Badlands is more like I Will Follow.
  6. Very good points all.

I would say that Bruce crowds don't really bounce that much for Born To Run like we do for Streets, the tempo is a bit too fast, although they do sing the chorus loudly.

Example, Badlands Barcelona 2002 - is more of a climax than Born to Run: Lights and bouncing at 0:19, 1:25

Also 5:10 - 5:40 when Bruce revs up the crowd, we don't get quite that crazy for I Will Follow.

  7. I can't agree on Badlands / Streets mainly because I fucking hate Badlands.

To me there's nothing similar between a two-to-four chord song and one of the most technically unique and soundscape-defining moments in history that is Streets.

You know, some people reported more jumping to I Will Follow than to Streets last tour. IWF and Badlands are much more similar in their very basic structures. Badlands is nothing like the sonic masterpiece that is Streets. It's just a simple rocker.
