Alguersuari was quite bad at the start, he was only 18 I think when he started his first appearance. I'll admit that he improved, but he had the rollercoaster form: he would do well for a couple of races, then his form would dip again. I think Toro Rosso gave him and Buemi enough time. They didn't really prove themselves. Ricciardo definitely deserved the seat, but I'm currently not sure about Vergne. In testing, he has looked promising but testing means nothing really in relation to times and speed. It's just the teams preparing and finding where their car is. Remember, Toro Rosso have stated that their team is "to promote young drivers and to get them into F1".
Back to Alguersuari, he mentioned that he was verbally told that he was going to keep his seat for 2012 in Brazil. It actually took him by surprise that they chose Vergne over him. He did have ongoing discussions with HRT, but he claims that it would put him backwards in the sport. Now, that is absoutely stupid. He isn't that talented to go further than Toro Rosso in my opinion, and saying that he is too good to be in HRT, is a sign of arrogance. A seat is a seat. At least it would keep him in F1 and get the motivation going for another year.
Yeah, I agree. The guy is plain stupid in my opinion, I can't stand him. But that doesn't keep me from saying he looked very promising. I think his and Buemi's rollercoaster syndrome were more the result of Toro Rosso's unability of providing a reliable car than his and Buemi's fault.
I think Torro Rosso served its purpose in developing young drivers. The team gave Buemi and Alguersuari 2-3 years in f1 to prove themselves in f1. If you can't show enough potential in those 2-3 years to be offered a seat by another team, i wouldn't shift the blame onto the team. Their a young drivers development team, you were never going to be there for the long term. Also, Alguersuari is to the day the same age as me, and that makes me feel old
