Well, I've finally gotten around to listening to it and I have to say that I'm quite impressed by it. I'm not sure where you're coming from with Jamie Cullum. I started at The Pursuit which to this day remains my favourite offering of his. I was less impressed with Pointless Nostalgic because the advance from 2002 to 2009 was quite noticeable and I have to say, I much prefer the Jamie Cullum we hear today than we heard back at the start.
That said, I think Twentysomething is good progress from Pointless Nostalgic though still lacking that polished edge that The Pursuit has. It's a mixture of original material and well executed covers. It's not quite enough (for me) to knock The Pursuit off it's perch but it's definitely worth listening to.
---------------
I've kept my goal of purchasing an album per week, this week I've ordered:
Genesis - We Can't Dance
Another classic from the 1991 vault. What a year to be born eh?
It's ok, 7/10. A bit too much cookie cutter metal for me and some heavier hard rock but without much bite. They've been doing this for the last few albums, not much innovation or going off the beaten track. Just straight up Thrash, mixed with some darker, slower stuff.
It was great when they got back on that thrash-trip for The System has Failed, but the three albums since haven't been as intense on the thrash side as System or Countdown and the hard rocking parts aren't as interesting to me as Cryptic Writings or Youthanasia. 13 is a bit more coherent than United Abominations, in my book.
The critics seemed to love UA, but it ranks way below System and The World Needs a Hero for me. 13 is better than UA, but not quite Endgame. YMMV.
Post 2000 I would rank them
1. System
2. Hero
3. Endgame
4. 13
5. UA
