    Most common cause of police officer mortality actually isn't firearms, or knives, but in most places traffic collisons. These tend to be exacerbated for two reasons:

    1. Many cops dont wear seat-belts, on patrol, since there are situations were they need to get out of the car as fast as possible.

    2. The cage in most cop cars, significantly increses the odds of fatal injury in a traffic collison.

    1. If you consider it a sport to gather your food by drilling through 18 inches of ice and sitting there all day hoping that the food will swim by, you might live in Michigan.

    1. "Vacation" means going up north on I-75

    4. You often switch from "heat" to "A/C" in the same day.

    5. You can drive 65 mph through 2 feet of snow during a raging
    blizzard, without flinching.

    6. You see people wearing camouflage at social events (including weddings).

    7. You install security lights on your house and garage and leave both
    unlocked.

    8. You carry jumper cables in your car and your girlfriend knows how to use them.

    9. You design your kid's Halloween costume to fit over a snowsuit.

    10. Driving is better in the winter because the potholes are filled
    with snow.

    11. You know all 4 seasons: almost winter, winter, still winter and
    road construction.

    12. You can identify a southern or eastern accent.

    13. Your idea of creative landscaping is a statue of a deer next to your blue spruce.

    14. You were unaware that there is a legal drinking age.

    15. Down South to you means Ohio .

    16. A brat is something you eat.

    17. Your neighbor throws a party to celebrate his new pole barn.

    18. You go out to a fish fry every Friday.

    19. Your 4th of July picnic was moved indoors due to frost.

    20. You have more miles on your snow blower than your car.

    21. You find 0 degrees! "a little chilly."

    22. You drink pop and bake with soda.

    23. Your doctor tells you to drink Vernor's and you know it's not
    medicine.

    24. You can actually drink Vernor's without coughing.

    25. You know what a Yooper is.

    26. You think owning a Honda is Un-American.

    27. You know that UP is a place, not a direction.

    28. You know it's possible to live in a thumb.

    29. You understand that when visiting Detroit, the best thing to wear is a Kevlar vest.

  7. What are the requiremnts in your country? Here most departments require you to be 21, and favor applicants with at least a 2 year degree. Good driving record, no major criminal charges, good employment, and credit history's are also helpful. Also, oviously its a good idea to be in good shape.

  8. Your country has a rather low crime rate though if I recall and the crimes you do have tend to not be as violent.
  9. WAs it in Britain cops where only tested for fitness when they joined, and then grew really fat? i think there was a spot on the news here about that. Things were going to change.

    Yes, we have a pretty low crime rate, yes. Something is done right here I'd say.

    I'll quote from the Home Office website:

    As you might imagine, applicant guidelines are fairly comprehensive, but here are a few highlights:

    ■ There are no minimum or maximum height requirements
    ■ There is no formal educational requirement, but you will have to pass written tests
    ■ You must be either a British Citizen, a citizen of the EU or other states in the EEA, or a Commonwealth citizen or foreign national with indefinite leave to remain in the UK
    ■ Although you may still be eligible to join the police service if you have minor convictions/cautions, there are certain offences and conditions that will make you ineligible. If you are at all unsure, contact your chosen force for more information
    ■ You must physically and mentally be able to undertake police duties

    One of the most rigorous elements of our screening process is the physical fitness training. Because our officers must be able to move quickly while carrying a lot of heavy equipment, they have to be in pretty good shape.

    If you pass the assessment process, you will then have to take a physical fitness test.

  12. Fat cops annoy me. The local city police here where I live seem to have to real physical requirement.

    The state and county guys tend to be in decent shape.

    The age requirement here comes from the fact that our cops carry guns, and in most states you have to be 21 to do that.
