1. It's actually fairly interesting how much longer it takes them to release albums now days than it did back in the 80's. I know that they have other agendas now, that's obvious, but even so, it takes them a LOT more time. Do you think it has something to do with a change in their songwriting process? I just find it interesting that it takes them literally years to make an album. To be honest if I sat down with a guitar for a month and had nothing else to do I could probably write 11 songs that I was happy with. Somehow I feel like that's how it was for them back in the early 80's, but now that month has become 3-4 years.
  2. Ever since the activism developed its definitely taken them longer time, so that might be a factor.

Also, back then, they were coming off of what they considered a "punk" (or even post-punk) type band- formula and specific style weren't a consideration for them as much as it probably is today. Edge's guitar delay was about the only thing that DEFINED a U2 song back in the day. So yeah, the songwriting process has changed in that now there's a songwriting process.

And I dunno if I like that.

Nah, just because there's 3-4 years long pause between albums doesn't mean that it takes them 4 years to make an album. They're intensively working on each album for few months, nothing more, IMO.

The other thing is their age. When they were thirty they could make an album every 6 months. It was more talent and less work. Now, I believe, they need to work much more to get satisfying results.
And you know, we all read U2 at The End of The World. When you live life like that you can write all kinds of crazy shit, you know. When you are home in your villa at the South of France with your kids, you won't get any inspiration for another 'Discotheque'.

I still remember one quote by Bono after they finished The Joshua Tree. They were working on in intensively for just one month and Bono said that he hopes that he will never need to go through so long process again. Hahahah.
  4. I think it could to a large part just be U2 wanting to have some time off from being the biggest band in the world. Every time they release something, they're forced into working in that role again. Maybe they just want to have time for other stuff.
  5. Not in 2012
  6. don't forget that inbetween these 4 year gaps are FULL world tours D: the long tours also have a hand in making it harder for them to make a new album. If you think about it they always working. Whether it be a tour or album, so during this post-tour time they need some time for themselves and their family. Which makes the wait for us all the more painful D:

    It ´s true.
Anyway i think they have a lot of music done from the last cds that they keep it. So they start working with that music they have done before
  8. Part of me thinks early 2013, March/April.

That can only be a good thing!
Discotheque-one of my all time U2 dislikes!!!
For me,next album end of 2013 followed by pre-tour and arena tour spring til Christmas 2014.
Also new songs on album imo should be a touch of Achtung,a touch of ATYCLB and a touch of Joshua, mix the fucker up and unleash it on the public!

This is probably quite a big problem for U2. So many people don't really 'allow' them to make something that sounds new for U2.
