1. After seeing the GnR thread and his name mentioned for 'retro rock', I figured Stevie Ray Vaughan needed a thread - and here it is. Definitely one of my favourite guitarists, and a great songwriter - shame he's no longer around, he was just hitting it big when he went - and would have been amazing to see what he could have come up with through the next decade.

Of course, he's only made my forever-second favourite song of all time: 'Rivera Paradise'. Others I'd nominate: 'The House Is Rockin', 'Look At Little Sister', 'Stang's Swang', 'Tin Pan Alley' and of course his cover of 'Voodoo Chile'.

Marvellous. A discussion from here - let's go!
  2. 22 years ago, SRV played his last show with Eric Clapton, Buddy Guy and Robert Cray - 'Sweet Home Chicago' by another American legend, Robert Johnson.

I'll also ask here: any other fans of Robert Johnson?
  3. I listened to Texas Flood earlier today. Stevie is certainly one of the ten best guitarist of all time. His cover of Voodoo Child is incredible.

Robert Johnson is certainly another leged. Ive got King of the Delta Blues Singers, but that's about all I've heard from him, though I know there isn't a whole lot more he had recorded. Johnson is in the line of truly great blues musicians to come out of my home state of Mississippi. We are pretty proud of that here.

Yes!!! Absolutely agree with both comments.

The Mississippi Blues, indeed. He only recorded I think it was 42 tracks in total, and I think a good portion of those are alternate versions for whatever purpose.
  5. I've seen a couple shows at the Alpine Valley Music Theater where the helicopter crash occured. Beautiful mountains and scenery, and when you remember SRV it sort of becomes haunting for a minute.

One of the best venues to experience a show at, though. Highly recommended.
  6. I love SRV (and Robert Johnson), not as much as Hendrix though.

My first introduction to SRV (as it was for many) was the guitar work he delivered for David Bowie (Let's Dance and China Girl).

Shortly after that I also stumbled onto the Fabulous Thunderbirds (Jimmie Vaughan's band). My Brother and I shared SRV CD's (Live Alive, Live at the al mocambo, Texas Flood, etc.) My fav tracks are Crossfire, Tightrope, Life by the Drop and his cover of Superstition.

Years later a friend of my brother's dropped by with his then brand new SRV Fender Stratocaster to test out my Marshall 4101 tube amp, so I got to play that SRV strat. I might need to get one at some point.
