1. I love his solo stuff. As usual, he's writing some great B-sides.
  2. not to re-open an old "controversy" .. anyhow ..

Noel Gallagher: 'I don't want to make an album that's as bad as Oasis' 'Be Here Now''

  4. This guy is deluded. If he made a record "as bad" as Be Here Now, it'd still be infinitely better than Heathen Chemistry, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants and Dig Out Your Soul

Mmm... Be Here Now has some great songs (in my view, Know What I Mean and Big Mouth above all... then possibly Getting Better Now, the title track... but, in my book at least, these last two songs rank below Go Let it Out, I Feel Love, Bag it Up, and perhaps even Shock of the Lightning... I might even like The Turning more...).

Noel might probably run the argument that, as far as these later Oasis albums are concerned, (i) he had to give space to (less talented) songwriters and (ii) the singer (Liam) didn't turn up to record effectively great songs such as Record Machine (which was apparently nearly ready for Dig Out Your Soul). Now, insert that song and take out one of the less inspired ones, and the album quickly goes up 20-30%...

Still, Oasis had definitely lost lucidity in 1997. They tried to repeat the 1994-5 success, they had some good ideas, but, alas, they more or less miserably failed... that's an orthodox view, but, for once, I agree with orthodoxy!
  6. This is where personal opinion/taste comes in I guess, because I feel there's stronger tracks on Be Here Now than the following four albums except the lead singles from Heathen Chemistry, most of Don't Beleieve the Truth and the odd choice song from the other two.

My personal favourites are Don't Go Away, Stand By Me, Magic Pie, D'You Know What I Mean, All Around The World and Fade In-Out. But I do have a bigger appreciation for the rest of the album, than the other albums. Maybe they just haven't clicked yet.

Don't get me wrong, I like the other albums, the point I was making is why hate on just that album? It's very good, maybe a touch too long but that doesn't matter really. I think Noel just doesn't look back fondly on that period. Perhaps he knows or knew at the time, the potential the album could have had, but instead it went wrong.

Or he was having a dig at Liam. Liam likes the album and Beady Eye released an album, about which Rolling Stone said "On Different Gear, the band attempts stripped down, Stones-y rock but ends up with 'Be Here Now'-style guitar bluster".

Either way, Noel should just move on.
  7. It's difficult to compare the last four Oasis albums with the first three - for me it is, anyway. Be Here Now is very good - some AMAZING tracks ("Stand BY Me" and "Don't Go Away" will always be my two favourites) to off-set the odd clunker. The music itself is great but many of the songs are indeed too long. The major issue with Be Here Now is simply that it isn't as good as its predecessors.

Many reviewers deem SOTSOG to be the worst Oasis album - I disagree. I have recently grown to appreciate most of the songs on the album, save "Little James," of course. Heathen Chemistry would have to be my least favourite of the bunch. The first six songs are solid (I am a HUGE fan of "The Hindu Times") but then it falls apart.

I agree Indeed, Noel exaggerates, most likely for the reasons you mention. I wish songs like Magic Pie could be re-recorded: even the shorter versions one finds in some edited version of the album are, well, a bit noisy... the potential was definitely there, but they got a bit lost in their drug loop... (according to Noel, the were high for a couple of years -- pretty much continuously...)

Mmm, I guess I like that album (HC) too (e.g. songs like She is Love, and even Born on a Different Cloud). I suppose I'm a real fan!
  10. Come on now. One doesn't have to like everything to be a "real fan."
  11. Liam has been thrown out of Santiago Bernabeu's stadium tonight while witnessing the Real Madrid - Manchester City match. He was apparently being disrespectful towards the adversary supporters and the security guards (he's been reported to having kissed a guard after Manchester scored their first goal).
