Have you ever noticed the MASSIVE diehard overlap between U2 and Bruce Springsteen's fan base?
Any insights as to why that is? I don't think it's just me. I've noticed the following:
-I have 5 friends, plus myself, who would count U2 & the E Street Band as 2 of their top 5. For 3 of them (and myself) U2 and Bruce are either #1-#2 or #2-#1.
-Similar career trajectories.
-Similar genres: mostly uplifting straightforward, accessible rock n' roll that is meant to be played in massive venues.
-Both built their fan bases through touring & live shows.
-Charismatic frontman who is famous enough to be known by one name.
-E Street "taught U2 how to play arenas & stadiums and make them intimate."
-Bono & Bruce inducted each other into the rock & roll hall of fame.
-BOOTLEG SUBCULTURES!!! There is a mirror website to U2start for Bruce Springsteen, along with a listing of his Top 55 recorded Shows. A large percentage of his shows are taped and easily available online.
-Famous cameos: Stand By Me in Philly 1987-09-25, Because the Night 2002-11-23 Miami
...and much, much more. I can't think of any other two artists for which this is true to the same extent. Any insight as to WHY this is?
About your first post Eddie (although 1.5 years ago)..watch this following vid from Pinkpop (national festival in Holland) from last weekend. Just simply awesome..
Funny this is indeed. One of my best friends and I are big fans of U2 & Bruce, we almost dont listen to anything else. He is slightly in favour of Bruce and I'm slightly in favour of U2
I think I remember reading in U2 by U2, they said that they were inspired by Springsteen and the E-Street Band.
But totally agree, U2 and Bruce are #1 and #2 in my book. Although U2 takes the top spot as my favorite band, Bruce holds my all time favorite concert, just on May 11, 09.
I'm not a super-big fan of Bruce, but I like some of his early songs. But I agree with you, I also have many friends that both like U2 och Bruce Springsteen
Great observation. They have been two of my favorites for 20+ years, and I'm passing on the passion to my three sons. My 8 year old is an aspiring guitar player and loves listening to both. Luckily, his teacher is encouraging him to play what he finds enjoyable, so we're looking forward to playing simplified versions of some of their classic songs.
