And this one has lots of codecs: http://www.free-codecs.com/download/K_Lite_Codec_Pack.htm

I'm generally clueless when it comes to this kind of stuff, so bear with me. If I have the MPEG2 codec, then I could technically play a DVD in Windows Media Player?

If Media Player knows about it, then it could be played.

Are you on Windows or a Mac?

There is a good guide done by drewhiggins within this topic (HERE)

There's also this topic, HERE, that may answer your question.

imToo is very popular here, but you will have to pay to get full functionality. Link is HERE.

Handbrake is very good but is also very slow (it took me 14 hours to rip Popmart).

On a Mac, MacTheRipper is very good.

With most of these programs, you will need something else to convert the files created so that you can watch them (on iPod, computer, to burn to disc etc). The topics above should help with that. I use iSquint, but it is again Mac only.

To a crew member - is it worth making a sticky DVD topic (stressing the requirement for ownership of the disc and that it is just for back-up etc) to help with this; it's a very common question on here?

14 hours to rip POPmart? It took me 14 minutes in the way that I do it. Whatever Handbrake uses as it's background ripper it's not very good. But I do like the idea of a DVD sticky. Not just for the ownership of proper discs but say that if you get a trade from somewhere you might wanna rip that to your MP3 player or a CD - no reason that can't be done.
  7. Update on the 100 (now 200) dollar laptop. The Edge created the start up sound. Cool or what?

I saw that. Edge making the startup sound. It reminds me of Windows 95 - Brian Eno created a startup sound for that too.
