Yep, things are moving! And: the band's (especially Bono's) relative silence might be a sign that they've learned something, perhaps from Noel G, and surely from David B.

But here's the thing: silence is good, it means, to my wishful thinking mind, confidence. Bombastic statements - they're sounding like the late Beatles/it is our best album/etc. - sound to me like there's a gap to be filled, with words, between the music one has made and one's ideal of what the music should have been like.

So relative silence is good: no gap to be filled, perhaps... let it be a quiet time until the Fall!

Yeah, silence and not going out and saying 'it's our greatest record ever' means that I don't have to have ANY expectations when I first listen to the album. Thank god.

uhm i'm not completely agree .. it's always a U2 release .. expectations come by themselves .. silence or not

But when U2 come out and say we've done an experimental record and it's a bit different compared to the last two albums, and it's our greatest ever, it makes me get all hot and horny thinking that it's going to be a mix of the best parts of the 90s all in one, with some new directions in there. But when they then go and put out NLOTH (which is still a fantastic record) and it's not what I was anticipating, well I get let down a little.

You're not going to say it's your worst record or not try to hype it up, though. Marketing is a wonderful thing when used properly.

As for experimental, I'm still waiting on something Passengers-like part 2. Fez was probably the closest thing to experimental on NLOTH. Hopefully the album is like NLOTH - it has a few interesting pieces, some straight-up rock and the rest can be whatever it wants to be.

Yes, of course (in response to the other post) expectations are always there for a U2 album, but if they come to us in a modest way, without telling us what to think about the record, I'll like this more. And I'll have less expectations.

Most rock n' roll bands are done making great music when they're in their 50's, or am I getting this wrong? The Stones kept writing pretty much the same (good) song since the 70's... Most notable exceptions might be Bob Dylan and David Bowie. But these are such high and exceptional standards to reckon with...

My default attitude is that their best work is behind them, and that we're lucky if we get some more good songs. But of course I really hope to be surprised when I say this... If U2 pull out a record that's as good as Noel's NGHFB and Bowie's TND, I'll be *so* happy.

In any event: Bono's such a big ego, and mouth, that - I think at least - it's now time (for them) to be humble and let the music speak... what NG and Bowie did
