Also a live version with the San Franciso Philharmonic Orchestra(U2 must do this once again..playing with a real orchestra, like BB King's Orchestra)

A bit on that famous "In The Air Tonight" drum sound.

Phil actually nicked the ultra-compression idea when he played on Peter Gabriel's third record. I am pretty sure that "Intruder" was the track that had that compression to the max idea. He actually went to the board and wrote down the settings. I think it was engineer Hugh Padgham that came up with those settings.

SO the compression plus the nature of the sound of Phil Collins single headed Premier concert toms... single headed toms like that send to 'bark' when struck with some force and a bit of rim shot too.

Larry's Boy-October Tama Fibre Star drum kit was made of single headed toms. And though his first Yamaha kits (Recording Series drums) were designed and had the hardware to have top and bottom heads, Larry cut out the bottom heads, essentially leaving thier tone as that of single headed drums.

WIth the nature of that kind of drums sound, it is easy to see why Larry's drums, when used in this way (single headed) lent more to tribal tom related patterns. (In example: Like a song, The Refugee from War)

More on Gabriel 3 producer? That would be Steve Lillywhite. Sound familiar? In 1980 alone, Lillywhite did Gabriel's third record, then XTC's Black Sea and then U2's Boy. Busy and fruitful year!
