In low light zoom lenses often have crappy performance. The kitlens on my nikon has f/5.6 at 55 mm (probably at 50 mm as well). The prime has f/1.8. This means the prime will gather up to 9 times more light at the same 50 mm.
(5.6/1.8)^2 = 9.67
So if you are in a dark club at night that means that instead of ISO 3200 you could shoot at ISO 330. Or lower your exposure time by the same factor.
