1. I just wondering about this for a few weeks or so...U2 released nearly all their DVD's in 2 formats, a normal one (usually in Super Jewel DVD cases) and a limited one - in beautiful Digipaks, with extra material. I really don't see the reasons behind it. Record companies are in a great fear that fans would download their material illegally from the internet, then why are they making a simple release with only a menu and a song selection as an extra? The price is not that much smaller, and it will be pirated on the very day of its release. But Digipak packages cannot be download, nor the lay-out, nor the booklets (like in the case of U2 18 Deluxe), and even the extra discs are not much likely to appear on torrent sites, then why are the better-made editions are limited for a smaller quantity, and why making the easily rippable simple releases regular ones? U2 could have earned much more if for example 18 would be released only in the Deluxe edition - some goes to all DVD's and The Joshua Tree re-release too. Now in the digital download-age, fans will only stop downloading if they get value for their money. U2 are tend to give value for money - but for a limited time only. Why?
  2. I like the limited edition option. It gives those people who are just fans the oppurtunity to have a copy of just the show and gives us die-hards access to 'rare' stuff (although only recentley have extras on U2 DVD's been worth the extra cash). I'll always but the limited edition option. I feel like I get that little bit extra from the limited edition and hell, they just look soo cool.

To repeat myself again. Some people just want the show, the rest of us want all the bells and whistles that the limited edition offers
  3. I think the reason that they release 2 versions is relatively simple.

Not everyone wants to buy a super-deluxe dogs bollocks version.

Especially with something like U218, which in the simplest sense was appealing mainly to casual U2 fans picked up on the back of The Bomb. These fans would just want a CD/ official download to put in their car/racks and wouldn't want / care about the extra paraphernalia and cost associated with a deluxe version.

Whereas we (the diehard fans) want something extra to compensate for the fact we have most of the stuff already.

This still holds true for new releases in my opinion even though the material is new.

And we won't talk about illegal downloading of official material on this site.....

Sorry, I definately did not want to encourage anything (I'm not a fan of illegal downloading of any kind), I just tried to think with the management's mind for a bit.

It's an interesting point you make, I like a good debate on the boards.

I like all the extra fancy bits and pieces that you get. If I'm gonna pay $40 I want something more than what a VHS offered...or something extra compared to shitty Hamish Hamilton material. The POPmart deluxe edition was something amazing with all the extra features.

And there's nothing like getting a bonus menu. That's worth $10 extra by itself.
  10. because when there is time pressure to BUY NOW OR NEVER(!?!), you are much more compelled to buy.

i HATE this because DVDs wear out if you use them, no matter how well you take care of them.

cds you can rip into your computer immediately. dvds not yet. so i hate the limited edition issues because i WILL buy them now but i want to know with certainty that i can RE-BUY it later when i need to.

this actually answer the question very well...limited things are all about the pressure.
