Anyway, I have to create a topic for this band. I've had a proper addiction to these guys for the last week and, for the love of God, it won't go away. Four and a bit albums and I still won't get tired of them.
They are probably one of the most influential bands of the last 25 years – influencing bands such as Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Stereophonics, Radiohead, and many more. They've had praise from a number of well respected artists. David Bowie described them as "one of the most compelling bands" he has ever listened to. Even Bono said that they are "one of the best American songwriters."
Pixies only lasted from 1986 to 1993, and their final gigs before splitting up were supporting U2 on their ZooTV tour in North America. They hated playing to half-filled venues where nobody was interested. They reunited in 2004 to sell-out tours and have stayed together since, albeit legendary bassist Kim Deal left the band a couple of months ago and has irritatingly been replaced by another Kim. Their latest EP was abysmal, but their work from the late 80's and early 90's is some of the most profound music in alternative rock. Without the Pixies, alternative rock wouldn't have been what it was in the 90's and even now. They set up that huge alternative rock movement. Even 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' has been described by Kurt Cobain and Dave Grohl as a "Pixies rip-off".
