I actually LIKE Elvis Presley And America.. Though nobody probably understands all the words, it's a good song that seems to vent frustrations with the opposite sex.. perhaps Bono was stepping into Elvis' marriage struggles with Priscilla when he was Stream Of Consciousness ad-libbing, for this song.
"Fire"/the October album can have been a little overplayed, if you played them like I did.
Also, if you've not: perhaps reading Revelation (in the Bible) might give it some perspective as, you may know, this is supposedly what Bono, Edge & Larry were deep into, at the time. Because of that it has a certain mystical/cold-Autumn/Celtic "landscape," to me, (not unlike the imagery in (Thomas) Hardy's "Return Of The Native"?) .. & perhaps `cause that's what the weather in (MD, US) was like when I got/played it a lot (`89-`90ish).
