Being U2 and being great, even if it is acoustic and just Edge and Bono
  3. Or maybe...'We're going to perform old songs only" - the newest song on the setlist was a '93 one...

I think he was being quite Edge-ish here and said it in sarcasm; it seemed like he was playing the part of "Dave" the guitar player who might make some mistakes, as he was introduced at the beginning.

    From NME:
The band opened with 'Zooropa' track 'Stay (Faraway, So Close)' with Bono reading the lyrics off a sheet on a music stand.

The singer changed the lyrics: "You can go anywhere/ Miami, New Orleans, London, Belfast and Berlin" to " You can go anywhere/ Miami, New Orleans, Belfast and Islington," which was met by roars of approval from the crowd.

After the track finished The Edge said : "I hope you like our new direction."

    Nope, read my post above.
  8. He could mean Bono's new image-shadelles, passengers hat
He could mean it like playing at different place,
  9. Definitely said with Edge-ish sarcasm; same as the introduction by Jo was heaped with irony. No other interpretation.
  10. Sorry, but are you people blind??

Read my post above, mystery solved.

With the greatest respect, reading something and hearing implied intonation are not the same thing. Just as something verbalised can be funny but written down it could be seen as being offensive.

I agree that taken literally the comment could imply that Edge was genuinely saying there is a new direction. But that was not the implication taken when it was actually said. Edge is well known for his sarcastic humour, especially in relaxed surroundings like this.

As I said in my previous post, to take everything said literally would be to think that Edge still goes by Dave and that he was nervous. And that Bono is shy! I think we all know that there was more than a little irony there.....

    Exactly right
