Radio interviews with promiment people usually work that way, at least in Spain. The program sets an hour with the interviewee, then they call him/her with a good few minutes (maybe 10, 15 mins) in advance, the interviewee listens live (on the phone) to the program for a while and then he's presented and goes on air. I don't think those 15 minutes keep U2 from releasing a new album

On the subject of BBC Radio 2 having bland music, it's a 50/50 split. Sometimes they have great music, but other times the music is appalling. It depends on the DJ, really.
