  1. This is very interesting to read, a usenet discussion from 1991 on 'The Fly':

    Basically the same things we're saying now about songs like Get On Your Boots etc. It helps put things into perspective and makes the future look very interesting, how will we look back on the albums of the past decade? Very different than now?

  3. It's like I said earlier on the "masterpieces-discussion".
    It takes time to properly judge a song or album.
    Boots was received very well the first days, then became garbage.
    Other songs take months or years to grow on you.

    If I may show my age for a moment...

    I definitely remember that AB was initially a very polarizing album. Hey, it took me a few listens to fully appreciate it. That said, I have always thought that those who embraced the album were individuals that were ready for change (the same goes for Nirvana's Nevermind) where those who weren't ready for something different and wanted to hold on to the past kept hung on for dear life to albums like Van Halen's F.U.C.K. and, maybe to a lesser extent, GNR's Use Your Illusions.

    I could/should defend the two GNR albums because I loved them at the time (and well into 1993) but I won't if only to keep this thread on topic.

  6. I was just getting into U2 when AB came out so was in love with the 80's U2 and heard AB and thought what is this sh*t?
    I needed quite a few listens before loving the album.
    For me Discotheque was poor then and still is,really dont like that track,GOYB holds great memories for me so i feel attachment to it despite it not being a great tune,i remember the 1st shows from Vertigo Tour and just thinking it wasnt going to take off and within a few weeks loving the tour,and still do very much.

  9. In a way its true - it's probably the most accessible song on the album. Even including "One," MW is definitely the song from that album I hear most on the radio.
