  2. It was 1981/82. A friend at school had an extra ticket to see J. Geils Band. "Freeze Frame" was a big album for them that year. I went and there was this odd band opening. Odd but fully of energy.

The singer was passionate and all over the place. The drummer looked younger than me! The bassist had this poofy blonde afro. And the guitarist had this funny shaped guitar (The Edge's Gibson Explorer)

For weeks I'd bug my buddy... "Hey, what was that band again... the one with the guitar palyer with the funny shaped guitar"?

I learned their name: U2. But it was not easy to find their albums at first. A year later, a girl I was dating brought over this record (yes, vinyl!). She thought she'd discovered something new to share with me. In red lettering U2 WAR. I remembered the name and she put on the record.

Playing drums and playing drums in marching band too... The drums on Sunday Bloody Sunday sucked me in immediately. The pounding bass drum on Seconds... and more drum goodness to be had on The Refugee and Like A Song. In between all of those, there were sparkling guitars, the likes I'd not heard before... except when I'd seen U2 open for J. Geils.

We listened to that record over and over that day. Each time finding something new, something deep, something fresh.

I remembered telling her about that J. Geils show and that weird shaped guitar. "If I ever learned guitar, I'd want one of THOSE", I told her. I'd shared that story with a few over time. One former g.f, with whom I am still very close with, took me at my word. I began learning guitar a few years ago.

One day, I'd gone to visit her family in Marin. Melissa showed up. I wasn't expecting her to be there. Her family was - they knew the reason for her journey. She was there, from NY, to deliver a gift. That gift she was looking for, for over 3 years. That gift was a 1976 Limited Edition Gibson Explorer.... the same make, model and vintage that The Edge uses!

So now, I have one of those funny shaped guitars. And it is the pride of my collection of guitars.

    yea...I want an ex!!! ... (;))
  8. Mine isn't reallly great, but it all begane with my cousin, he likes the band but isn't a feak fan like me and you

So, I have familly in Rivière-du-Loup, a cute village on the coast of the St-Laurence River. So it was the chrismas vacations and because my dad whas bringing my grandma and my aunt to the my oncles house in RDL I made tge trip with my cousin.

The only two album that he had from U2 where ''best 1990-200'', and ATUCLB. I like it, I didn't falll for it yet but I found it really cool. I knew only two U2 songs, Vertigo and Beautifull Day.

So when I arrived home, I dowloaded a few songs from Lime wire. And I went nuts. So I went to HMV to buy their famous Josua three, but It wasn't their. I bought a cool-looking album that I didn't know about called ''Achtung baby''. THEN I FELL IN LOVE.

So weeks past and I my U2 songs collection grew, and grew. And one day, I found this site !

.,.. and I haven't yet gotten the Josua three for my own

    their it is, my U2-Story

    Edit ->

  9. The Simpsons episode. When my family first got cable I saw it. It was also when they were making there 2000 comeback so VH1 was chokeful with there clasic vids.
  10. My best friend was a U2 fan back in the early 80's...we used to listen to Under a Blood Red Sky and War alot... I think I used to get sick of U2 and moan about them. But I did love Sunday Bloody Sunday and I Will Follow. (and Drowning Man, and Refugee...)

I remember One Tree Hill when it came out, it was in our charts for ages here. A beautiful song and I think New Zealanders felt a connection with it... Here was the biggest band in the world singing a song about one of our people/places.

Anyway I got into punk and left U2 behind... then in the late 90's I became a Christian and all these people I met were into U2 and told me U2 were Christians.,, I had no idea (even though I knew that song Gloria, I thought it was about a girl...) So I started hearing a bit more U2

But it wasn't until 2005 when my friend played ATYCLB and I was like What is this? I knew the first 3 songs from the radio,,, but Kite and Walk on were like wow... then soon after I was babysitting and played the U2 Slane Castle dvd and was literally blown away.

I began playing that ATYCLB solidly for about a year. It was a tough year and that album really helped me through it.

I belong to a group of Christians who are into social justice, and they all love U2. All their kids are around 10 years old and are becoming U2 fans.
  11. Well, how I discovered U2. It all started with a school trip to Canerbury and Bath, England. The bus-driver allowed us to play our cassettes. Back home I decided to buy a cassette-recorder because I thought it was cool to have lots of cassettes. Later on New Year's Eve I recorded a show which played all the great songs from 1984, which included Pride-In the name of love. It became one of my real favourites back then, and I wrote on the cassette: In the name of love by You, too .
On my next birthday in 1985 I got Under a blood red sky from a friend of mine, because I went on his nerve with Pride. I really liked 40 with the audience singing on. Until autumn 1986 I wasn't much into U2 because I went to the army, apart from Pride only the Unforgettable Fire (Single) was on a cassette, but it lost to Don`t you by Simple Minds, which was recorded before it. For my birthday in 1986 I got a Compact Disc Player (greetings to all Dutch members here) and I bought Boy, October, War and The Unforgettable Fire in one go. Next to Bruce Springsteen (Born in the USA) U2 was one of my favourites. Until 1987, when The Joshua Tree changed everything. It made me become a die-hard fan. So you can imagine why I love to see The Joshua Tree remastered.
  12. These are two great stories
