  1. I fought the temptation to give you an instrumental (Explosions In The Sky, Mogwai) album, and I couldn't be arsed to translate an Spanish album for you all to listen and understand the words (Vetusta Morla, Izal), so I opted for a more conventional thing.


    So, the first one that reads this post, just say A, B or C and you will get one album of my choice or another one - they are already defined, just don't know which to choose

    hahaha That EITS album (which is one of their best by the way) was among those I considered. But not having lyrics (apart from Have You Passed Through This Night?) was some serious downside

    Frank Turner - England Keep My Bones


    England Keep My Bones is the fourth studio album by London-based singer-songwriter Frank Turner, released on 6 June 2011. The album's title is taken from William Shakespeare's play, The Life and Death of King John, with Turner noting, "I knew that the album was, for the most part, about mortality, and about Englishness. Shakespeare seemed like a good place to go hunting for some pearls of wisdom, and with a little help from my friend Ben we came across this one, and it just seemed to fit the work really well".

    You might or might not know this guy. I have been following him for some years (since he released this very same album in 2011) and I've seen him live - he's a blast. Funny guy (met him after the show, he had played a song requested by me -not on this album sadly), great musician, fantastic singer, awesome frontman. But that all means nothing, now it's up to you. I hope you all like this album
  5. I certainly know his guy, he performed "I Still Believe" at the London 2012 Olympics. That's where my knowledge ends though. Seems like the kind of guy who could be up my street, I do share a similar taste with another Frank Turner fan, so we'll see. Looking forward to listening to it
  6. Ran into him in a theatre once, we were both seeing Ryan Adams. Love his music. "Ballad of Me and My Friends" is a hauntingly accurate and gorgeous and scary song. Can't wait to give this album a spin.
  7. Sorry this is late, had a very busy week and finally had some time to listen to this thing, and ooooohhhhhh boy was it fun to listen to. It's something that isn't up my alley, however, being the classic rock junkie that I am, I enjoyed the guitars plenty and couldn't find any real negatives on the album aside from anything I've noted.

    I took on this album from several angles, and while each of them aren’t all created equal, I did the best I could trying to touch upon as many bases as possible. I also listened to this on Spotify, so I hope people enjoy some of the quirks I also got to enjoy aside from the album.

    DaDa –interesting intro, very dark and it introduces you to exactly what you should expect from this album: dark themes, dark humor, and of course – Alice Cooper’s spin on things.
    Enough’s Enough – gets right into the album, which most definitely is a concept album, with a catchy little chorus too.
    Former Lee Warner – forgettable, I don’t know why but after hearing it I couldn’t recall anything from the song.
    State Farm – not as good as some other commercials I’ve heard…could’ve been better
    NAPA auto parts – No, thanks
    No Man’s Land – I mean, it’s not the first time Santa’s has songs with him been sexualize and alld, but I found it to be a bit humourous. One of the more memorable songs from the album, sonically and lyrically.
    Dyslexia – Another one of the more memorable songs off the album, very catchy all around. Up there with No Man’s Land and Pass the Gun Around.
    Scarlet and Sheba – Call me crazy, but it sounds like a song where the narrator/first person of the song is experiencing both sexual and emotional abuse. Sonically, it’s on par with the rest of the album. I had to skip through this song due to personal reasons, though.
    I Love America – Alice making a farce, granted some bits of this song are a bit racist, and essentially a track that perhaps sheds some light on the stereotypes of the US and how ridiculous the picture is, or rather if the stereotype fits the reality
    O’Reilly Auto parts – I already hear this catchy tune of a commercial on radio sports, thanks
    Walmart – YUP, I got a Walmart ad.
    Fresh Blood – Right up Alice’s alley. I really like the brass section here. Sounds like a murderer’s theme song quite honestly. Also, somebody slap a trigger warning on this for using the word r**e in the song.
    Pass the Gun Around – it’s Anthem-esque in that it sounds like an ode to drinking, and has great guitar solos. I guess Alice saved the best for last on this one. And literally ends with a bang.

    Overall, it’s not exactly my taste in music, but overall it’s a very solid album. I don’t really know his music well despite me having met Mr. Cooper himself – but it seems to be what possibly is a great intro to Alice’s songs, albums, concepts, and themes.

  11. Thanks! The only downside of the story is that I improvised the sign over the back of the support act's setlist that I had previously got from the singer, lol. So now I can't decide which to display on my collection, the setlist or the signed request? Ah. 1st world problems

    Album of the week - Alice Cooper: DaDa

    Out of 26 Alice Cooper albums, DaDa might be the strangest one of them all. Recorded at a time when Alice himself was looking like he was about to die, synthesisers and drum machines were in fashion and guitars were still in some kind of form, comes this odd little 1983 album which you could say is at times, autobiographical.

    The album opens up with a strange bubbling-like sound and the calls of a small girl saying 'DaDa' (this is Bob Ezrin's daughter here) we get to hear the, at times obscured, other times clear as day, conversation between a manipulative psychologist (Ezrin) and the father (?), trying to clearly confuse him. The sound of a weird chamber ritual is enough to creep you out.

    Next up is Enough's Enough. Definitely more upbeat and poppy than the intro but no less dark than anything else here, is a piece about child prostitution. Seeing the son as worthless and throwing him out on the street to fend for himself, all the while faking his 'love' for him that never was there.

    Third is Former Lee Warmer. As a fully-formed piece, this one tells the story about a cannibal (or at least a disowned member of the 'family') who's locked up in the attic. Nobody wants anything to do with him and he's left basically with no hope in the world. Listen out for the 'lock and key' sounds in the background behind the guitar solo - and when Alice's voice gets really gravelly ('former Lee Warmer waves at his father out in the family grave'). Maybe he's been put here because he caused the father's demise....

    Do you know anyone who has a few personalities? No Man's Land is the song for you. Watch out for personality disorder and more importantly, watch out for yourself.

    Dyslexia. Ah, the first song on the album with reverse humour. Maybe the character in No Man's Land has eight different ways of doing things....the one thing I cannot stand with this song is the way-outdated instrumentation. I'll best skip this one and go to the next song.

    Scarlet And Sheba is a cautionary tale if you try kinky things with a vampire (or vampires), bad things will happen. In a way, this song harkens back to songs like Cold Ethyl and Something To Remember Me By but instead of singing to a corpse, it's the corpse singing to the predators. The middle-Eastern instrumentation here takes this song up another notch, as does the beautiful guitar solo (but not the best one here). Scarlet might be fun, but Sheba is the one you want to watch for.

    I Love America is an ode from a kid 'from Michi-D' and that's it. It's kind of comical, but once you've heard it once that's it. Not a strong song, but not terrible either. Why this one was the hit from this album is beyond me.

    A funky bassline for a song called Fresh Blood ... who would have thought it. When you hear of when 'he' gets hungry then 'I' go hunting, it's safe to say the double-personality is back and more dangerous than before. The backing vocals are so catchy...'fresh blood it goes through me, flows through me, goes through me, flows through me...' This could have gone for ten minutes more, I like it that much.

    Here is where I say 'WHAT A FUCKING ENDING'. And here it is....Pass The Gun Around at a touch under six minutes is split into three sections; the truth, the party and the end of it all. The blood runs, the alcohol is getting to him. Take some more and everything will be fine...is it over yet...

    Not yet. Everything is disintegrating before his eyes. His life, his mind, his helplessness is killing him. Someone of convenience (a prostitute?) is all he had left to hold onto...even after the party balloons are removed and the money is gone.

    ...until he wakes up after yet another nightmare. This is where it all stops...here. He's just about gone. Nothing will save him, nothing will keep him going. 'He wishes he was dead....I don't think I can take this anymore....why don't you pass the gun around... Everyone's being taken by the Stoli, the gun and their helplessness is taking them out, one by one. Floating away, out of consciousness, out of life, out of mind, out of sight...he's out...

    ...I don't think I can take this anymore...

    ...Give everyone a shot...
    ...Pass the gun around...

    It's over.
