  1. Another “verified” speed corrected remaster from one of the 1990 Rotterdam “Lovetown” shows. This time it is the MvdV master tape of the 3rd night. As I've already mentioned in the other topic, this is the mastertape that was used for the Angel Of Rotterdam bootleg, however edited and (re-)mastered at an incorrect speed (about 2/5 semitone too fast). Still, in comparison with the MvdV master, Angel Of Rotterdam has a superior sound, although somewhat compressed (and perhaps even slightly “clipped”).

    In order to present the MvdV master in its most optimal form – that is, sounding like Angel Of Rotterdam but without its edits, compression, and playing at correct speed, I attempted at a fresh remaster from scratch.

    Reference for the speed correction was the by MvdV recorded Beatles’ original “All You Need Is Love” that played over the PA right before the concert started. My assumption is that this record was heard in the venue at the correct speed (not unlikely being sourced from CD). A simple measuring of running time between distinct markers has let me to believe that the speed correction of roughly 2/5 semitone (19/100 of a double semi-tone, to be precise!) is accurate with a margin of +/- 0.00017 seconds per second (or 1 second per hour).

    To bring henceforth the master on par with Angel Of Rotterdam in terms of sound quality, I used a spectral image from the latter as a reference for a complete manual equalization of the “raw” MvdV recording. Without using any compression or noise reduction the sound of the now fresh remaster is even more clear and tranquil than the old Angel Of Rotterdam, to my ears at least (these things are always debatable, of course)*. As far as so-called tape-flips are concerned, I have only applied fades and edits in the encore break. This will also allow proper fitting on CD format for those interested.

    To be distinguished from Angel Of Rotterdam, I have dubbed this fresh remaster Angel of Holland. Not a very fancy name, but maybe it is good not to make things too complicated.

    PS2: I didn't want to share this as a torrent because for some reason the u2start torrent site/thing isn't working so well with me. If anyone else wants to bring it on the u2start torrent site, it's OK by me (but, please, only on u2start !!! - this because I think u2torrents should only be used for: master recordings, verrified copies of masters, the regular pool of uag's, and authorized matrix mixes. Remasters, I think, are typically at home with dedicated fan sites such as u2start...

    Sharing mp3's (made of the flac files) and shared here at u2start is, of course, also fine by me!

    Could very well be as all these analogue tape recordings have to deal with the various motor drives of the tape recorders and the tape decks used for the digital transfer. The advantage of these Rotterdam "Lovetown" recordings is that they have a distinct point of reference in the PA music. The 29-4-87 Rosemont Horizon does not have such a certain reference.

    The only other reference is the assumption that U2 played "in tune." But to determine whether or not the recording is actually "in tune" as well requires musician skills - or, perhaps, an electronic tuning device.

    But I agree, the Rosemont Horizon 29-4-1987 "feels" a little too slow. To correct it, however, would be mere guessing and I'm not sure if that is such a good idea...
  5. Thanks! I see... I guess it should be safe to assume that they played in tune, but I agree that, without a point of reference, it will be hard to adjust the speed. When compared with other shows, the whole show is a fraction of a semi-tone lower -- and, indeed, slower. It is such a pity: it spoils it a little for me, and it is our best JT recording (well, with the official Paris show in early July).

    Which prompts the following thought: might it be an option to 'tune' Rosemont with the official Paris show? I guess it is safe enough to assume that instruments where tuned in the same way night after night, given also the presence of pre-recorded material in some of the songs (MLK, Streets, WYW, Bad etc.).

    Boston Garden, 18-09-1987 and Madison Square Garden, 28-09-1987.

    These are the best JT recordings to my opinion.

    I guess so too, but finding out which key was used for every song - or just 1 reference song - is one thing, "tuning" a recording is another thing. Personally I would go with Bono's bluesharp, f.i. in RTST. The notes produced are pretty straight forward (some D's or C's?). Then goof a little with different speeds and a tuning device... One could also just transpose 3/5 or 1/2 semitone for personal use...
