1. Oh, I just watched it and loved it! Though I suppose I can see why you might not love it...

To each their own, I suppose.
  2. If some people don't like the video, there's little I can do, but reading through some of the reasons for the dislike leaves me puzzled. For example:
    a) The video is not about "the original meaning of the song". This song is like One. Some say that it is about Edge's love life, others say it is about Bono and Ali. Some people can say it is about God and speaking about U2, you're all probably right. But then, why is that important? This is not a video for the song, with U2 involved in the artistic decisions. This is a McArdles's project and she wanted to tell her story. Judge it by that, not by whatever you wanted to see for the song.

    b) Too many "f-words". (not in this forum) Really? People should talk now like the Hollywood movies, with witty double entendres, quoting Shakespeare and slogans? That is life. People talk way worse. Get used to it. Anything else feels imposed and artificial

    c) They already talked about The Troubles in videos like Please. Well, this is not a Troubles video, it's about life in the middle of that era. Falling in love, coming of age, caring for someone else and almost loosing her because of hate and bigotry.

    d) Stereotypical, cliché U2. Well, to me, stereotypical U2 video is band playing for 4 minutes and nothing else happens, but no one seems to mind that. This is the opposite of cliché: The band gave McArdle full liberty of realizing her vision, they didn't appear at all in the video and they took the risk of making a video in '80s Northern Ireland. They could easily make another "fun" video of them playing and, ironically, no one would accuse them of being stereotypical or cliché.

It's strange that the people that didn't like the video have not mentioned intrinsic issues, like bad acting, poor story, not doing justice to the era, etc.

    Just my two cents.
  3. I like U2 when they aim to surprise. To me this is just U2 reminding me of Green Day circa 2000 with their video of Wake Me Up When September Ends, and of U2 being a little too political even when the song's lyrics don't call for it.

It sort of reminds me of how Bono changed his explanation of the lyrics of electrical storm from just a love song to some 911 BS.

This video would be like if U2 released this video for WOWY instead. It's just kinda stupid to me.
  4. I also think there are way more interesting single choices on this album than the few they've chosen already. But hey, that's U2 for ya :p
  5. U2 didn't do squat. They gave artistic freedom to someone else to do whatever she wanted. Take it as a fan made video, with a lot of budget and directorial skills.

Their song and they endorsed its release obviously.

I get what you're saying, but as part of a promotional campaign (as far as I can see it) it's sort of the opposite of hype.

This is probably the most accurate description of this video. It also describes Films Of Innocence as well.

Just because the band endorsed it doesn't mean it's exactly what they would have done if they decided to make a music video.
  8. Interesting? Maybe? But Every Breaking Wave is the best and most powerful U2 song in years.

I was thinking about it today how "The Miracle" really struck me AND I love how it rocks but "Every Breaking Wave" stays with me. I love every version and it really does feel like it could knock me over.
  9. I like the video for almost every reason mentioned by all of you.
One thing.....it could also be a video for TT or RBW in my view
And that is something positive as it reflects the coherence of SOI and the skills of the director as it is multi interpretable.
Still I like the FOI approach as well, just a different ball game then a music video
  10. Looks very interesting! Hope I can catch it in the U.S. Impressive for a directorial debut.
