1. Originally posted by sdking91I'm not saying that Joshua Tree is a bad record, because it certainly isn't, but I do think that the second half of the album really lags. For instance, line up Achtung Baby! with Joshua Tree song by song:

    Streets..............................Zoo Station
    Still Haven't Found............Even Better
    With Or Without You.........One
    Bullet.................................Until The End
    Running............................Horses

I would say taht is a pretty darn even set of songs. Joshua Tree might be slightly stronger, but that is certainly up for debate. Essentially though, in my mind, it doesn't matter because of the second half.... look.

    Red Hill.............................So Cruel
    God's Country..................The Fly
    Trip...................................Mysterious Ways
    One Tree Hill....................Tryin to Throw
    Exit...................................Ultra Violet
    Mothers...........................Acrobat
    ...........................Love Is Blindness

Come on now. I've heard arguments for one tree hill and exit being fan favorites, and I will grant that. It is a more than fair argument. But seriously. So Cruel might be one of Bono's best vocal performances, and lyrically it is stellar. The Fly is one of U2's top five best rock songs. Mysterious Ways is the Edge at his finest. Trying to Throw has some incredible writing in it, yet is so simple. Ultra Violet is a roller coaster of brilliant song writing. And as for Acrobat and Love is Blindness... do I really need to even argue that point? Those are easily two of U2's best songs... period.

I don't know if this is a little extreme or not. I"m not trying to make enemies here... I know how many people love Joshua Tree. Just thought it would be interesting to see some responses. Let the games begin.

A new way to approach this question, I like you line-up thing. I agree with most of it, but even if the first part of Achtung is awsome I would rank the first 5 songs of Joshua higher. Not much higher, but played well (I listen mostly to bootlegs) the Joshua opening beats Achtung's.

  2. I feel that "The Joshua Tree" and "Achtung Baby" are equally brilliant. I feel that both albums have a lot to offer musically, texturally and lyrically.

I do not agree with the assessment that the second half of "The Joshua Tree" lags. You are welcome to that opinion. I just respectfully disagree.

I agree with you on one point: JT starts off awesome and gets a little weaker in the end. But I also don't consider every AB song a true classic. Here's my match song by song:

    Streets > Zoo Station
Still haven't found > Even better
With or without you = One
    Bullet > Until the End
    Running > Horses
    Red Hill < So cruel
    God's Country < The Fly
    Trip = Myterious Ways
One Tree Hill = Tryin to throw
    Exit < Ultra Violet
    ... < Acrobat
    Mothers > Love is blindness

So in the end it's 5:4 for Joshua Tree. At least for me.

But as I said, it's really a tie and changes every day. One day I prefer AB, the next day JT.

  4. All That You Can't Leave Behind
  5. For me like many others its Achtung Baby. Zoo Station is the best opening song for an album, One makes me feel better when Im down. Wild Horses and Until the End of the World are unbelievable. I can go on forever.
  6. I would say a 3-way tie within the Magnificent Trilogy. ATYCLB hits hard in the heart like no other album, Achtung Baby has some unbelievably heavy songs and the Joshua Tree is the definitve American music album.

After those three I would say Zooropa and Unforgettable Fire. Zooropa was just weird (which made it cool), and The Unforgettable Fire was almost like a whisper (except for songs like Pride).

I def agree that second half of AB (The Fly!! Ultra violet!!) is better than second half of JT. But look at the first 3 tracks on JT. Any one of those could immortalize a band.
  8. The Unforgettable Fire
  9. Sometimes I like Achtung Baby more, sometime I like Josha Tree more, but it'll always be The Unforgettable Fire for me. It's their most enigmatic album, imo. "A Sort Of Homecoming" is easily on par with "Zoo Station" or "Where The Streets Have No Name" for the best opening track on a U2 album. The music is as dense and lush as are the lyrics, and Bono's voice is incredible.
  10. It's a silly question, no-one whom knows all the albums can decide for one.
